Munguia vs. Allotey Fight Preview

CARSON, Calif. -- Not many 22-year-old fighters have a world title and 33 wins under their belt but that's exactly what Jaime Munguia has.  Munguia will be making the fifth defense of his WBO junior middleweight title against Ghana's Patrick Allotey.  The two will meet on Sept. 14 on DAZN.

Munguia, catching Dennis Hogan with a hard right hand
Munguia (33-0, 26 KOs) doesn't have elite skills or fancy footwork or even the best motor.  What he does have is a fan-friendly style and power in both hands.  Munguia is also a big junior middleweight who regularly has a size advantage over his opponents.  The young champion loves to apply pressure and fight on the inside where he can attack his opponent's body.  He has a mean left hook along with a dangerous right hand and while he tends to get wild with his power punches they still do plenty of damage when they land clean.

Munguia really arrived on the scene in 2018 when he dropped Sadam Ali four times on his way to a stoppage victory.  That performance earned Munguia the WBO title he still holds.  In his first defense of that title, against Liam 'Beefy' Smith, Munguia was able to drop Smith and win a unanimous decision but he also showed some vulnerability.  That vulnerability was very apparent in his last fight against Dennis Hogan.  Munguia was lucky to get the decision in that fight and his lack of any kind of defense will be an issue for him moving forward.  It's those vulnerabilities that make Munguia's fights so fun to watch though.  Despite the outcome, fans know when they tune in to a Munguia fight they are going to see plenty of action.

Allotey (40-3, 30 KOs) is the type of fighter who likes to keep moving.  He works behind his jab and doesn't like to be a stationary target.  Allotey does have a pretty good right hand and a left hook he likes to bang to the body but he's also full of flaws.  He has a habit of backing straight up and often just waits behind a high guard when his opponent is on the attack.  Allotey will then step away from danger but only after being caught by multiple punches.  He also gets lazy with his punches at times and doesn't do a good enough job protecting his chin.  While he does have an impressive 30 knockouts he has also been stopped twice in his three career losses.

Allotey, celebrating a victory
The 28-year-old Allotey has mostly fought in his native Ghana.  Out of his 40 career fights only four have come outside of Ghana.  One of those fights took place in the U.S. but it didn't end well for Allotey as he was knocked out in the second round by Patrick Teixeira.  Now Allotey will travel back to the U.S. to take on another heavy-handed fighter in what will be his first fight of the year.

It really doesn't matter who Munguia fights, what their record is, or how hard they hit.  Because of Munguia's flaws he will always make things exciting and take some unnecessary punishment.  Allotey has shown power against lesser fighters and he has won six fights in a row.  Still, he isn't a very good defensive fighter and lets his opponents get off way too much.  Look for Allotey to really stay busy with his jab as he tries to keep Munguia on the outside while using his legs to make Munguia chase him around the ring.  As for Munguia, expect him to come out fast behind plenty of power punches as he looks to test Allotey early.

PREDICTION: Patrick Allotey has too many defensive flaws to win this fight or even make it to the final bell.  Jamie Munguia will look strong in this fight and he will get the knockout victory in the sixth round.
