Estrada vs. Beamon Fight Preview

HERMOSILLO, Mexico -- Gather around boxing fans.  It's time for another edition of "How the Hell Did He Get a Title Shot?"  On this edition, champion Juan Francisco Estrada will be putting his WBC junior bantamweight title on the line against Dewayne Beamon.  While Beamon is ranked 14 by the WBC he is outside of the top 15 in the WBA, WBO, and IBF rankings and has never faced an opponent anywhere near the level of Estrada.  The two will meet on Aug. 24 in the main event of a DAZN card.

Estrada, celebrating his victory over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai
Estrada (39-3, 26 KOs) has long been one of the most exciting little men in boxing.  His aggressive style and lack of top tier defense makes him a fighter you can count on to bring plenty of action to the ring.  Estrada likes to use his jab as a range finder for his power punches and he has plenty of power on those punches to be certain.  While his right hand is a good weapon it's his left hook that is his best punch.  He can hurt opponents with the left hook punch upstairs but he's really dangerous when he's digging it to the body.  Estrada likes to trade heavy leather on the inside and he's shown himself to be a very durable fighter over the years.

Somehow Estrada is only 29 years old.  I say somehow because it feels like he's been around forever.  He began his pro career in 2008 and has since put together a wonderful career.  He has won titles in multiple divisions has has beaten some of the best fighters available.  Among his victims are fighters like Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Carlos Cuadras, Hernan 'Tyson' Marquez, Giovani Segura, and Brian Viloria.  He also dropped a fight to Rungivsai and lost a fight against Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez.  For years fans were clamoring for a rematch between Estrada and Gonzalez but it never materialized and now probably never will.  Still, Estrada has been able to find plenty of quality opponents to face off against and now he will look to defend his title against Beamon.

Beamon (16-1-1, 11 KOs) likes to stay busy with his jab but he uses the punch more to set up his right hand than he does to control the fight with it.  He also has a bad habit of letting his right hand drift away from his chin when he throws that jab.  Beamon relies heavily on that right hand.  He prefers to fight on the outside and doesn't really seem to have a plan of attack or a great idea of what to do when he's on the inside.  He does have a strong left hook that he will dig to the body at times but he doesn't use that punch nearly as often as he should.  Defensively Beamon is there to be hit and when he goes on the attack he tends to leave himself wide open for a counter attack.

To say that Estrada represents a step-up in competition for Beamon is like saying that Mount Everest is a step-up from the hill at your local park.  There isn't another opponent on Beamon's resume who comes close to being as good as Estrada.  It also doesn't look great that Beamon lost to a fighter with a record of 13-9-4 just two fights ago.  While he did get revenge in their rematch it still isn't the kind of opponent that will prepare him for a fighter like Estrada.

This fight is a mismatch.  There's not getting around that fact.  Once again fans will be subjected to seeing a top fighter in his division take on an opponent who is miraculously only ranked in the top 15 by the sanctioned body whose belt he's fighting for.  Beamon does some things well and his right hand is certainly a great punch that can do serious damage but that probably won't be enough against Estrada.  Look for the champion to push the pace early and really test Beamon.  For Beamon's part he will need to land some of those big right hands early if he hopes to get Estrada's respect and and make him think twice about going on the attack.

PREDICTION: Juan Francisco Estrada is too skilled and too experienced for Dewayne Beamon.  Beamon might land a few good right hands that briefly stun Estrada but they won't be enough to give Beamon the win.  Estrada is going to dominate this fight and he will stop Beamon in the 10th round.
