Davis vs. Nunez Fight Preview

BALTIMORE -- It will be a homecoming fight on July 27 for Gervonta Davis.  The Baltimore native will be putting his WBA junior lightweight title on the line in the main event of a Showtime card.  Trying to spoil that homecoming for Davis and trying to take his title will be Ricardo Nunez.

Davis, celebrating his WBA title win
Davis (21-0, 20 KOs) seems like one of those fighters who, as long as he keeps his head on straight, will soon find himself on pound-for-pound lists.  The southpaw has a quick and powerful jab and carries power in both hands.  He seems to do everything well, although in some recent fights his punch output dipped as he just looked to load up and end fights with a single punch.  At his best he's aggressive and lets his hands go.  Davis has a nice left hand and a devastating right hook.  The 24-year-old has also shown himself to be a good defensive fighter and he likes to use the shoulder roll to deflect punches coming his way.

Hopefully Davis doesn't buy in to his own hype too much and end up looking like the sequel to Adrien Broner.  Davis won his first world title in 2017 when he dismantled Jose Pedraza.  He then defended that title by stopping Liam Walsh but lost that title on the scales in his next fight when he failed to make weight.  Davis won that fight too but was without his IBF title belt.  He didn't have to wait very long to become a world champ again.  Davis stopped Jesus Cuellar in the third round to take his WBA title and successfully defended that title against Hugo Ruiz in early 2019.  If fans weren't happy with Ruiz as an opponent for Davis they will be equally displeased with Nunez.  Neither is a bad fighter but they don't seem to be at Davis' level and most fans would much rather see him in the ring with the likes of Tevin Farmer, Miguel Berchelt, or Jamel Herring.

Nunez (21-2, 19 KOs) likes to work on the inside.  He usually stands in front of his opponent and his offense is definitely his defense.  Nunez doesn't have much of a jab and often walks forward without making much use of that punch.  The Panamanian has shown a strong left hook and he can certainly surprise opponents with an uppercut using his right hand.  His hands aren't very fast though and most of his knockouts have come against opponents who aren't anywhere near the level of Davis.

Nunez, exchanging punches with his opponent
Of Nunez's 23 career fights only one has come outside of his native Panama.  It's mind boggling that he even got a title shot, especially considering his last fight was an eight round bout against an opponent with a record of 22-30-3.  Nunez has been scheduled to go 10 rounds just three times in his career and the furthest he's ever gone is just eight rounds.  There really isn't a notable opponent on his resume and Davis represents a massive, Mount Everest size step up for him.

This fight should be all Davis.  He simply does everything better and at a higher level than Nunez does.  Nunez's lack of defensive skills and slower hands will cause him problem against an elite fighter like Davis.  Look for Nunez to try and make a stand early and he will need to somehow get Davis' respect if he doesn't want to get steamrolled.  Expect Davis to be aggressive early as he looks to end this fight early.

PREDICTION: It isn't too disrespectful to say that Ricardo Nunez doesn't belong in the same ring with Gervonta Davis, at least not at this point in his career.  Davis is going to dominate this fight and he will win this fight by the way of third round knockout.
