Serrano vs. Reynoso Fight Preview

NEW YORK -- History could be made on Sept. 8 when Amanda Serrano (34-1-1, 26 KOs) attempts to capture her sixth division title.  Fans won't be able to watch the fight on television but they can stream it on Showtime's Facebook and YouTube pages.  Serrano will take on Argentine pugilist Yamila Esther Reynoso (11-4-3, 8 KOs) with a vacant WBO junior welterweight title on the line.

Serrano catching her opponent with a stiff jab
Serrano is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in women's boxing.  She fights out of the southpaw stance and has tremendous pop on her punches.  The Puerto Rican native, now living in New York, like to walk her opponents down and has power in both hands.  Serrano goes to the body well and while she has a nice jab she usually focuses more on her power punches.  Those power punches come in the form of a heavy right hook and thudding left hand and both should be on full display against Reynoso.

Serrano has been a professional boxer since 2009 and her only loss was six years ago in 2012.  Since that loss she has gone 20-0 with 17 knockouts.  In April of 2018 Serrano tried her hand at mixed martial arts and fought to a draw against Corina Herrera.  Now Serrano will make her 2018 debut as she looks to make history.  No other women has ever won titles in six division and no Puerto Rican fighter, male or female, has either.  Serrano has previously won titles at bantamweight, junior featherweight, featherweight, junior lightweight, and lightweight.  The last title Serrano won came in the junior featherweight division and her last bout came in the junior lightweight division so she will be moving up to take on the naturally larger Reynoso.

Reynoso fights out of the orthodox stance and along with her size advantage, she is also seven years younger than the 29-year-old Serrano.  Reynoso likes to work behind her jab and feints often.  She likes to follow her jab with a strong overhand right and there is plenty of power on that right hand.  Reynoso is not without her bad habits though.  She tends to get lazy with her jab and doesn't bring it back to her chin after she throws it.  That will leave plenty of opportunities open for Serrano to land her right hook.  However, Reynoso has always shown a good chin and she's never been stopped in her five year career.

Reynoso celebrating a victory
Saturday will be the first time Reynoso fights in the United States.  She hails from Argentina and that is where all but two of her career bouts have taken place.  She should be in good form against Serrano since she has already fought three times in 2018, going 2-1 with one knockout.  Reynoso's last fought took place in the welterweight division so she will be moving down in weight to challenge Serrano in what will be one of the biggest fights of her career.

While Serrano is the bigger name in women's boxing that doesn't mean Reynoso is a pushover.  Reynoso has youth and size on her side and could make things tough on Serrano.  Serrano puts her punches together better than Reynoso so expect her to fight aggressively and really put the pressure on her Argentine opponent.  For Reynoso's part look for her to really get on her jab and try to keep Serrano on the outside where she can control her with the jab and hurt her with heavy right hands.  Both of these woman can really crack so it might be a case of whoever has the best chin will win.

PREDICTION: Yamila Esther Reynoso will put in some good work but the aggressive style of Amanda Serrano will ultimately be too much for her to overcome.  Serrano really likes to let her hands go and her aggressiveness will be on full display as she really gets on Reynoso and stops her in the 10th round in a history making performance.
