Fury vs. Pianeta Fight Preview

BELFAST, Northern Ireland -- After nearly three years out of the ring before making his return in June of 2018, Tyson Fury (26-0, 19 KOs) will waste no time getting back to action.  Fury will face off against Francesco Pianeta (35-4-1, 21 KOs) on August 18 in a fight scheduled to go 10 round from the heavyweight division.  The fight will stream live on Showtime's Facebook and YouTube pages.

Fury catching Sefer Seferi with a right hand
Fury is a massive heavyweight, standing at 6-feet, 9-inches tall with an 85-inch reach.  He fights out of the orthodox stance and likes to leave his lead hand low while always making sure to stay busy with his jab.  Along with that jab Fury also has a solid right hand and he does a nice job of mixing up his attack.  While he doesn't look very athletic or fluid in the ring, looks can be deceiving.  Fury has the ability to switch stances and does a nice job of moving in and out of danger.  He does have some flaws though, like his lack of power and a chin which isn't the best, as evidence by his knockdown at the hands of blown-up cruiserweight Steve Cunningham.  In his most recent fight Fury showed plenty of ring rust but he should be able to shake that off the more he fights.

In 2015 Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko to capture IBF, WBA, and WBO titles.  That win was the biggest of his career and it is also where Fury fell of the rails.  Following that fight Fury was suspended for drug use and a lucrative rematch was scrapped.  He also announced his retirement during that long ring absence, only to reverse that decision shortly after.  Along with his win over Klitschko, Fury also holds wins over solid veterans in Cunningham, Dereck Chisora, and Christian Hammer.  A fight against WBC champion Deontay Wilder looms for Fury but first he will need to handle Pianeta.

Pianeta is a 6-feet, 5-inch southpaw who lacks tremendous power or a solid chin.  He often leaves his lead hand low and when he jabs he doesn't bring his glove back to his chin, instead leaving it down near his waist.  Pianeta does have a good left hand though and can do damage with it from range.  He also has a solid right hook but his best punch is definitely his left hand.  An issue for Pianeta is that he doesn't use his feet all that well so defensively he is there to be hit.

Pianeta landing a jab
The biggest fight of Pianeta's career came in 2013 when he took on Klitschko and was stopped in the sixth round.  He also took a bad first round loss to Ruslan Chagaev in 2015.  In recent years Pianeta has stayed very busy, fighting three times in 2017 and twice already in 2018.  However, in his last five fights he is just 3-2.  In one of those losses he was stopped in the seventh round and the records of his opponents in those three wins were 1-0, 26-11-2, and 3-2 so he hasn't been facing great opposition and Fury will be a step up for him.

Hopefully this fight is a bit more serious than the last time Fury appeared in the squared circle.  His fight against Seferi was more of a welcome back affair than an actual fight.  Seferi was seriously undersized and seemed to show up just to give Fury a few rounds before quitting.  Certainly Pianeta won't be as much of a pushover.  Look for Pianeta to jump on Fury early and try to land big left hands.  He can't let Fury find his groove and start to take over because Fury has the skills to do just that.  Expect Fury to get off to a bit of a rough start but once he gets going he should be able to control the pace and distance.

PREDICTION: Francesco Pianeta will definitely give a better account of himself than Sefer Seferi did, but that won't be enough to hand Tyson Fury his first career loss.  Fury will find his groove and outbox Pianeta on his way to a unanimous decision victory.
