Roman vs. Flores Fight Preview

FRISCO, Texas -- Showtime will bring boxing fans a tripleheader on June 16, headlined by a title fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Carlos Ocampo.  The co-feature will also be a title fight, between Daniel Roman (24-2-1, 9 KOs) and Moises Flores (25-0, 17 KOs).  On the line in that fight will be Roman's WBA junior featherweight world title, a division where Flores is the WBA interim champion.

Roman rocking an opponent with a hard right hand
Roman is an orthodox fighter without much power to speak of.  He has a decent jab but it's more of a measuring stick than a weapon he uses to score with.  The measuring stick jab does help him land an accurate straight right hand though.  Roman is also very skilled with his left hand, especially on the inside where he has shown a good left hook and uppercut.  The lack of power definitely hurts him but he has an aggressive style and can overwhelm opponents.

After suffering a couple of losses early in his career Roman has been on a tear of late.  His last loss came back in 2013 and he's currently riding a 16-fight win streak.  Roman's last four opponents have combined for one loss and he scored two stoppages in those four wins.  Among Roman's victims are Ryo Matsumoto and Adam Lopez but he still lacks a true marquee name on his resume.  However, if he keeps winning he could take on some of the other names at the top of the junior featherweight division, names that include Guillermo Rigondeaux, Rey Vargas, and newly crowned champion Isaac Dogboe.

Rigondeaux is an opponent who Flores has already been in the ring with.  That fight was in 2017 and it originally looked like a first round knockout victory for Rigondeaux.  However, replays showed that Rigondeaux connected with a left hand after the bell that floored Flores and when Flores was unable to continue the fight was ruled a no contest.  It was a terrible look for Flores though as he didn't exactly perform well in the opening round and seemed to be looking for a way out.  That was his only fight that year and he only fought once in 2016 so there is a good chance that Flores looks very rusty against Roman.

Flores landing a stiff jab as sweat flies off his head
Flores is also an orthodox fighter but he carries much more power on his punches than Roman does.  His jab can be lazy and often just looks like he's wasting it while he bides his time to unleash a power punch.  He does have a decent right hand but he often throws wide or looping punches.  His best punch is probably his left hook, which he likes to bang to the body on the inside.  A lot of Flores' punches come in wide though and if Roman can time his punches he should be able to find success.

This bout will present fans with an interesting contrast of styles.  Saturday's fight will be the classic case of boxer versus puncher, with Roman being the boxer and Flores the puncher.  Being the better boxer but lacking power means Roman will need to stay very busy in order to keep Flores from getting comfortable and sitting down on his power punches.  Look for Roman to try and slip and counter Flores' wild punches and as long as he doesn't get caught clean he should find success.  While ring rust might not be as much of a problem for a puncher like Flores as opposed to a slick boxer that doesn't mean Flores might take a while to heat up and find his groove.  That could be disastrous for Flores if Roman is able to put a lot of the early rounds in the bank but look for Flores to come on late as he guns for the knockout.

PREDICTION: Daniel Roman has already fought once in 2018, twice in 2017, and four times in 2016.  Meanwhile Moises Flores has only fought twice since 2016 and those two fights only totaled 13 rounds.  Because of the rust Flores will show Roman will get out to a big lead and hold it, on his way to a unanimous decision victory.
