Hammer vs. Nelson Fight Preview

DETROIT -- On June 22 Showtime will air to female title fights.  The main event of that card will showcase Claressa Shields in her toughest test to date against Hanna Gabriels.  In the co-feature Christina Hammer (22-0, 10 KOs) will put her WBC and WBO middleweight titles on the line against Tori Nelson (17-1-3, 2 KOs).

Hammer catching Kali Reis on the chin
Hammer fights out of the orthodox stance and is incredibly tall for a middleweight fighter, standing at 5-feet, 11-inches.  She works behind a good jab and often follows it up with a quick straight right hand.  Hammer uses her height intelligently and while she will let loose with a left hook on occasion, her best weapons are her jab and straight right hand.  The tall Kazakh fighter who now resides in Germany also has good power, making her a difficult opponent for any middleweight.

After turning pro in 2009, Hammer has been nothing but perfect.  She has won every single one of her professional fights in one of two ways, either scoring the knockout or the unanimous decision victory.  Although Hammer hasn't fought yet in 2018 she did fight twice in 2017, going 2-0 with one knockout.  Certainly Hammer can't afford to look past the one-loss Nelson, but a win on Friday night could set up a showdown with the winner of the main event with all the middleweight titles on the line.

Nelson is also an orthodox fighter and she likes to be the aggressor in her bouts.  She has a nice, short left hook along with a pretty nice straight right hand.  Her jab is decent but she's definitely lost some hand speed from earlier in her career.  That loss of speed isn't a surprise though considering Nelson is now 41 years old, 14 years old than Hammer.  One bad habit Nelson has is that she tends to pull straight back on defense and against the taller, rangier Hammer that could spell trouble.  Although she does have an excellent chin and has never been stopped which helps cover up some of those defensive flaws.  Another thing that could hinder Nelson is her lack of power.

Hunter catching her opponent with a clean right hand
Despite being 41 years old Nelson only began her career eight years ago.  She's already fought once in 2018, resulting in the first loss of her career when she dropped that bout to Claressa Shields by the way of unanimous decision.  She does have some impressive wins though.  Most notably her victories over Mia St. John and Kali Reis.  Against Hammer though Nelson will be in the ring with a young fighter in her prime who has a serious height, reach, and power advantage.

This is going to be a tough fight for Nelson to win let alone look good in.  She likes to come forward and make good use of her left hook and right hand but she lacks any serious power.  Hammer is the more skilled boxer between the two and those skills combined with her other advantages should add up to a fairly easy night for her.  Yet she can't overlook Nelson and needs to make sure she uses her height advantage and keeps Nelson at the end of her jab and right hand.

PREDICTION: Tori Nelson is a tough fighter but at after this fight she might wish she wasn't.  Sometimes it's better to get stopped early but Nelson won't be that lucky.  Instead she will be dominated over 10 rounds and Christina Hammer cruises to a wide unanimous decision win.
