Charlo vs. Trout Fight Preview

LOS ANGELES -- Two years after his brother Jermall beat Austin Trout (31-4, 17 KOs) Jermell Charlo (30-0, 15 KOs) will look to repeat the task.  The fight will take place on June 9 on Showtime and Charlo will be making the third defense of his WBC junior middleweight world title.  Meanwhile, Trout will be looking to turn his fortunes around, having lost his last four title shots.

Charlo dropping Erickson Lubin
Of the Charlo twins it is Jermall who is the harder hitter but Jermell who is the slicker boxer.  Charlo fights out of the orthodox stance and has fast hands and enough power to earn opponents respect and that power seems to be increasing.  Charlo has stopped his last four opponents before the 10th round and everything starts from his jab.  The jab of Charlo is excellent as is his straight right hand.  Along with his skilled jab and dangerous straight right hand, Charlo also has a good left hook and he is usually an aggressive fighter.

Among Charlo's victims are fighters like Gabriel Rosado, Vanes Martirosyan, and Erickson Lubin.  He first really started stepping up his level of competition in 2013 and now at 28 years old it's time for Charlo to start facing the best of the best, as long as he takes care of business against Trout.  One very impressive thing about Charlo is that he always wins big.  Every single one of his 30 careers wins have come by the way of knockout or unanimous decision, a trend he will look to continue against the aging Trout.

Trout is a southpaw who loves to play the role of counter puncher.  He isn't the type of fighter who every gets over aggressive and he usually doesn't like to lead the dance.  Instead, Trout fights intelligently and waits for counter opportunities when his opponent makes a mistake.  Trout works behind a long busy jab that is one of his best weapons.  Following his jab Trout loves to bring his straight left hand to his opponent's body and while he also has a decent right hook most of his damage is done with the jab and left hand.

Trout trading blows with Jermall Charlo
This fight will be Trout's ninth career title fight.  In title fights Trout is 5-4 but he has lost the biggest of those fights to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, Erislandy Lara, Jermall Charlo, and Jarrett Hurd.  Usually aggressive offensive fighters like Charlo play right into the hands of a skilled counter puncher like Trout but Trout didn't do well against Charlo's brother Jermall who is even more aggressive than Jermell.  At 32 years old Trout is definitely past his prime, with his best years coming around 2012 and 2013.  However, he remains a dangerous fighter who shows ring intelligence and being that this could very well be his last shot at a title he should be very hungry.

This fight offers an interesting contrast of styles.  While Charlo isn't a true power puncher he has been knockout out opponents more frequently.  Charlo has quick hands and an aggressive style while Trout is more cautions and measuring with his attack.  Trout will gladly let Charlo take the lead while he attempts to use his aggressiveness against him and counter him all night.  That is easier said than done though and Charlo should have some great insights into Trout by just asking his brother about his time in the ring with him.  This fight could come down to whoever controls the pace, with Charlo looking to push the action while Trout will look to bog things down.

PREDICTION: If Jermell Charlo can tag Austin Trout early and often he could break him down and stop him late.  However, Trout will be very cautious early and that caution early on will help him make it to the final bell but won't help him win the fight.  Charlo is going to win this bout by the way of unanimous decision.
