Jacobs vs. Sulecki Fight Preview

NEW YORK -- From his hometown of Brooklyn, Daniel Jacobs (33-2, 29 KOs) will take on Maciej Sulceki (26-0, 10 KOs) in a WBA middleweight title eliminator.  The fight will headline an HBO card on April 28 and the winner should get a shot at current WBA champion Gennady Golovkin, a rematch Jacobs would relish.

Jacobs' story is well documented.  He was a rising tide when he was stricken with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.  Not only was his career at risk, but also his life.  Jacobs was undeterred though and after a long absence made his ring return and has now climbed back to near the top of the middleweight division, beating opponents like Caleb Truax and Peter Quillin along the way.

The Brooklyn resident goes by the fitting nickname "Miracle Man."  He fights out of the orthodox stance and is one of the sports biggest punchers.  Jacobs has a nice jab and what really makes him dangerous is the fact that he has plus power in both hands.  Jacobs can drop an opponent with his excellent left hook and strong right hand and that right hand will come in straight or overhand.  Another key for Jacobs is his focus on the body attack, something he will use against Sulecki.

Sulecki is a Polish fighter and he should have plenty of fans in Brooklyn because Polish fans really come out to support their fighters.  Sulecki has spent the majority of his career fighting in Poland and first came stateside in 2015.  Chicago was the site of his biggest win to date, a 10th round technical knockout win over Huge Centeno Jr. in 2016.  However, outside of Centendo, Sulecki hasn't faced many top opponents and certainly no one at Jacobs' level.

Sulecki is an orthodox fighter but he doesn't have much power and that could spell trouble if he doesn't get the respect of Jacobs early.  While Sulecki has a solid jab it isn't a great weapon and he does his best work in the inside.  He really likes to let his hands go when he's in the pocket and he has a nice left hook to go along with a strong straight right hand, the punch that he beat Centeno with.  However, getting inside on Jacobs won't be an easy feat.

One issue Sulecki could have against Jacobs, despite being the taller of the two, is that Jacobs has a 5-inch reach advantage.  A reach advantage like that along with Jacobs' excellent jab could spell trouble for Sulecki.  In this fight look for Jacobs to control the action with his jab while he picks his spots to unload power punches on Sulecki.  Meanwhile, Sulecki might have to sell out and do whatever he has to in order to get inside and make things rough in the pocket.  That strategy could work for Sulecki but it might also hasten his demise.

PREDICTION: Maciej Sulecki is an undefeated fighter who has never been down as a professional.  He's not a bad opponent for Daniel Jacobs, he's just not quite at Jacobs' level, at least not yet.  Jacobs might drop Sulecki in the early or middle rounds but this fight will go to the final bell with Jacobs scoring the unanimous decision victory.
