Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Manny Pacquiao's trip to Australia to defend his WBO welterweight title didn't go as the Filipino Senator had planned.  Pacquiao took on the relatively unknown Jeff Horn on ESPN and most people expected Pacquiao to have an easy time, especially since he was Horn's best opponent by leaps and bounds.  Instead of an easy time Pacquiao found himself in a very close and very tough fight.  The aging star did not look very good and had a hard time with Horn's aggressiveness and awkwardness.  While the Australian wasn't very accurate he was very busy and when the scores were announced his aggressiveness was awarded with a highly controversial unanimous decision win.  The loss was disastrous for Pacquiao who will now look to get back on track while Horn chases more big fights.

  • Another important fight from last week was the one between Robert Easter Jr. and Denis Shafikov on Bounce TV.  On the line in that fight was Easter's IBF lightweight title in what would be his second title defense.  The fight was a tough one and both men put in good work over the course of 12 rounds.  Both Easter and Shafikov put in good work and each had their moments during the fight.  When the scores were announced though they looked much wider than the actual fight did as Easter was awarded the unanimous decision win.  While the score of 116-112 was fine the other two scorecards of 120-108 were far too wide.  Making his return to the ring in the co-feature of Friday's PBC on Bounce TV card was Julian Williams.  This was Williams' first fight since being knocked out by Jermall Charlo and he looked good against Joshua Conley, stopping him in the seventh round.

  • ESPN didn't just air the title fight between Manny Pacquiao and Jeff Horn last weekend, they also aired a Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN card on ESPN2.  The main event of that card was a bout between Oscar Negrete and Sergio Frias.  Negrete brought his unbeaten record into the ring while Frias was looking to avoid his seventh career loss, a big number for a pugilists in his mid 20s.  That seventh loss would come though as Negrete dropped Frias in the third round and forced him to quit on his stool after the eighth round.  Anothetr undefeated fighter in Ryan Martin also appeared on Friday's card.  Martin took on Marcos Jimenez, a tough veteran who was supposed to give Martin a tough test.  Instead Martin completely dominated the fight, winning every single round on all three judges scorecards.

  •  Last week's action began on Tuesday when the PBC returned to Fox Sports 1.  The main event of that card was a 10-round welterweight fight between Miguel Cruz and Alex Martin.  The fight was a rematch of their January fight which took place earlier this year and Cruz won that bout with a split decision.  The rematch would prove to be an even easier time for Cruz who dropped Martin in the first and fourth rounds on his way to a close unanimous decision victory.
