Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The biggest name in action last week was Brandon Rios, who returned to action on Sunday night on a PBC card after a brief retirement.  Rios took on Aaron Herrera, a tough but limited opponent who could test how much Rios had left.  Like seemingly every Rios fight this one took place from the pocket and both fighters took plenty of heavy punches.  In the middle round Rios, whose hooks and uppercuts where doing damage, really started to take control and in the seventh round he caught Herrera with a body shot that dropped him and left him unable to beat the count.  Rios didn't show much rust and looked like his typical self which means he will continue to give fans exciting fights.  Also on that card was undefeated prospect Mario Barrios who took on Jose Luis Rodriguez.  Barrios was expected to win that fight and he looked strong against Rodriguez on his way to a seventh round knockout.

  • Saturday night had two separate fight cards, one of which was on beIN Sports Espanol.  That card was headlined by a fight between the undefeated prospect Pedro Campa and journeyman Juan Antonio Rodriguez.  Campa, being undefeated and a solid prospect, entered the fight as a heavy favorite and he showed why over the course of his 10 rounds against Rodriguez.  The fight was never in question and Campa won all 10 rounds on two of the judges scorecards and eight rounds on the third judge's card to win the fight with a wide unanimous decision

  • The other fight on Saturday aired on CBS Sports and featured Daniel Franco and Jose Haro going head to head.  Unfortunately the fight took a tragic turn after the action in the ring was over.  It was a hard fought battle between the two fighters but in the eighth round Haro dropped Franco twice, knocking him out with the second one.  After being knocked out Franco had to be rushed to the hospital after suffering two brain bleeds.  He was placed in a medically induced coma and doctors have said the next 48 hours will be critical and boxing fans continue to hope for the best possible outcome for Franco and his loved ones.

  • Last week's action started on Friday when two undefeated prospects in Regis Prograis and Joel Diaz Jr. went head to head on Showtime on another ShoBox: The New Generation card.  On paper it looked like a very even fight that should have been close for its entirety.  Instead Prograis showed that he is special and ready for the next level as he dominated Diaz, dropping him four times in the second round on his way to a very impressive stoppage victory.
