Weekend Wrap-Up

  • It was another week without much action in what has otherwise been a jam packed year for boxing.  The only two fights covered by Big Time Boxing last week both aired on Showtime.  The main event of that Showtime card featured lineal light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson in a rematch with Andrzej Fonfara.  Their first fight in 2014 was excellent and featured multiple knockdowns but the rematch lacked any of the drama from the first time around.  In the very first round Stevenson dropped Fonfara and had him badly hurt, although he was able to survive the round.  However, between rounds Fonfara's trainer, Virgil Hunter, clearly didn't like how his fighter was responding.  In the second round it looked like target practice for Stevenson who landed a few power punches before Fonfara's corner threw in the towel which was probably the best decision for the health of Fonfara.

  • The co-feature on Saturday's Showtime card was another light heavyweight bout, this one between the undefeated Eleider Alvarez and Jean Pascal.  Pascal had been badly beaten and stopped by Sergey Kovalev in fights in 2015 and 2016 so many people thought he wouldn't have much left and he didn't.  Alvarez controlled the action for nearly every round and all Pascal really did in return was try to land wild overhand right hands.  The big knockout punch never landed for Pascal and it looked like Alvarez would be awarded the wide unanimous decision victory.  However, this is boxing so nothing is easy and instead of the unanimous decision he deserved Alvarez had to settle for the majority decision win.
