Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The biggest fight last week was obviously the HBO pay-per-view main event between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.  What was supposed to be a Mexican war instead was nothing more than a sparring session for Alvarez.  For every minute of every round Alvarez controlled the action and was able to do whatever he wanted on his way to a extremely wide unanimous decision win.  The best part of the fight came after the final bell when Gennady Golovkin entered the ring and it was announced that Golovkin and Alvarez will finally fight this September.

  • The co-feature of that HBO pay-per-view card was a bout between slugger David Lemieux and the always tough Marcos Reyes.  Although he took a serious beating, Reyes somehow managed to make it to the final bell.  Lemieux looked good, although he didn't pay much focus to return fire which saw him get caught a bit too often.  When the final bell rang though it was Lemieux who got the clear unanimous decision victory.  Lucas Matthysse also returned on that card, facing off against Emmanuel Taylor.  Matthysse hadn't fought since his embarrassing loss to Viktor Postol in 2015 but he looked sharp against Taylor.  He dropped Taylor in the third and again in the fifth, the second of which ended the fight.  The opening bout saw two undefeated prospects in Joseph Diaz and Manuel "Tino" Avila.  On paper it looked like it would be a competitive fight but in the ring it was all Diaz who cruised to a wide unanimous decision win.

  • Yuriorkis Gamboa also returned to action last week but probably wish he hadn't.  Gamboa took on Robinson Castellanos who has an ugly record but is always dangerous.  In the third and fourth rounds Castellanos was able to drop and hurt Gamboa and after the seventh round Gamboa would quit in his corner.  Gamboa may choose to continue to fight but after that abysmal performance most fans wouldn't be mad if he retired.  That card, which aired on ESPN2, also featured a fight between Abraham Lopez and Jesus Rojas.  Lopez was a big favorite but Rojas was relentless and dropped Lopez three times on his way to a eighth round stoppage in a big upset.

  • A fight that looked bad on paper turned out to be bad in the ring as well.  That fight aired on UniMas and saw undefeated prospect Jose Ramirez take on the relatively unknown Jake Giuriceo.  Ramirez entered the fight as a huge favorite and showed why as he easily handled Giuriceo on his way to a second round stoppage victory.

  • The first fight of last week aired on Fox Sports 1 as part of a PBC card.  The main event of that card pit Ivan Redkach against Argenis Mendez and neither man could afford another loss.  It was a very close fight and a point deducted from Redkach for leading with his head was the difference.  Mendez got the razor thin split decision win and if it were not for the point deduction the fight would have been ruled a split draw.
