Weekend Wrap-Up

  • It was a busy week of boxing with cards on Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday but none were higher profile than Saturday's card on HBO.  That card was headlined by a bout between Vasyl Lomachenko and Jason Sosa.  Lomachenko was the heavy favorite entering the fight and showed why when he was able to do anything he wanted against the tough but limited Sosa.  Lomachenko showed why he is one of the 10 best fighters in the sport but unleashing a sustained attack that Sosa had no answer for.  He was beating Sosa so easily that he even seemed to hold back later in the fight once the outcome seemed determined and after the ninth round Sosa's corner mercifully put an end to the fight.  Lomachenko may have a difficult time finding another top name to get in the ring with him but most fans are already buzzing about a bout with the heavy hitting Mikey Garcia.

  • Saturday's HBO card was a tripleheader and the co-feature was a bout between Oleksandr Gvozdyk and Yunieski Gonzalez.  Most expected it to be the closest fight on the card, especially since both of Gonzalez's career losses were highly disputed.  It turned out to be anything but close as Gvozdyk completely dominated Gonzalez on his way to dropping and stopping him in the third round.  It was a terrible loss for Gonzalez's career and a statement win for Gvozdyk who now has boxing heads buzzing.  The opening bout on that card featured Oleksandr Usyk against Michael Hunter.  The fight was a close one as Hunter was able to frustrate Usyk who spent a lot of time covering up and not enough time letting his hands go.  To start the fight, HBO commentator Max Kellerman said he though Usyk was the most talented fighter over 175 pounds but Usyk certainly didn't live up to that hype on Saturday.  However, as the fight wore on Usyk began to land more as Hunter began to tire.  In the final round Usyk dropped Hunter and then unloaded the kitchen sink on him.  Hunter did make it to the final bell but he absorbed a lot of punishment in that final round and the fight probably should have been stopped.

  • On Sunday Josesito Lopez headlined a PBC on Fox Sports 1 card against Saul Corral.  It was a fight that Lopez needed to win and win was exactly what he did.  Lopez looked good and even was able to drop Corral in the last round after hurting him a few times during the fight.  When the scores were announced all three judges scored every round in Lopez's favor, giving him the unanimous decision win.  Also on that card was fight between the undefeated Alejandro Luna and Andrey Klimov.  Klimov had lost three previous fights and each time the loss came against an undefeated fighter.  Luna handed Klimov his fourth loss, again coming at the hands of an undefeated fighter.  Luna looked strong during the fight and won a clear unanimous decision.

  • The action that started out last week began on Tuesday when the PBC returned to Fox Sports 1.  Edner Cherry and Omar Douglas headlined that card and both were looking for a win in order to climb their way to a title shot in the lightweight division.  While it was a pretty close fight man fans felt that Douglas did enough to win.  The judges disagreed however, as they awarded Cherry the close unanimous decision win.
