Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN Quick Picks

Michael Perez vs. Marcelino Lopez: On Thursday night Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN will return to ESPN2.  The card will be headlined by a fight between Michael Perez (24-2-2, 11 KO) and Marcelino Lopez (32-1-1, 17 KO) that is scheduled to go 10 rounds from the junior welterweight division.  Perez is coming off a loss his last time out and because he's never really had a signature win he is the type of fighter who really needs to string more than a few wins together.  Lopez hasn't lost since 2014 but he has only fought three times since that loss and his last fight came back in 2015 so he should show plenty of ring rust.  Also, Lopez hails from Argentina and of his 34 career fights 33 came in Argentina and this will be only his second fight stateside.  While neither fighter has a great resume it is Perez who has faced the better caliber of opposition which could help him on Thursday night.  Perez is an orthodox fighter who carries a stiff jab he likes to work to the body.  He also puts in good work with his right hand which is the punch he looks to do the most damage with.  Perez will also mix in a left hook, especially on the inside, and he likes to bang that punch to the body.  However, you don't see much lateral movement from Perez who likes to come straight forward and mix things up, making him vulnerable for return fire.  Lopez is also an orthodox fighter and while neither man has much power it will be Lopez who is the heavier hitter in this fight.  Although he will be the heavier handed fighter, Lopez will also be the fighter throwing less punches which could hurt him if this fight is close on the cards.  Lopez works behind a solid jab that he looks to follow with a right hand.  Along with those punches Lopez also throws a wide left hook but the most damage comes from his right hand.  Both Perez and Lopez like to come forward so this could be a good fight but one thing Lopez doesn't like is pressure in his face.  He usually lets his opponent get off with his punches while he just covers up and waits for his turn.  If Lopez looks to pick his spots to land something big he will probably be letting Perez rack up the points and the rounds and because of that Perez is going to win this fight by the way of unanimous decision in a close fight.

Rashidi Ellis vs. John Karl Sosa: Thursday's co-feature will pit to sub 25-year-old fighters against each other in Rashidi Ellis (17-0, 12 KO) and John Karl Sosa (13-2, 6 KO).  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds from the welterweight division where Ellis looks to continue to climb the ladder while Sosa just looks to avoid losing three fights in a row.  Ellis is fresh off a first round knockout of Eddie Gomez who Sosa also faced and lost a close unanimous decision to.  Ellis works out of the orthodox stance where he fights behind a quick jab.  He likes to keep his lead hand low and has an athletic style where he relies on his quick reflexes to avoid eating leather.  His best punch is his right hand but he also has a nice left hook, although he has been dropped before while trading hooks with a hooker.  Still, Ellis has an athletic style and fast hands and that has added up to an undefeated record.  Sosa is also an orthodox fighter but he will be at a power and speed disadvantage against Ellis.  Sosa likes to use his jab as a measuring stick for a short right hand and he loves to work on the inside.  The problem for Sosa is that he stands up very straight on the inside and he doesn't move much once he gets in the pocket so he typically eats a lot of heavy leather.  In this fight look for Sosa to try to get in the pocket and make this a rough fight.  He will look to score with right hands and quick left hooks but to get inside he may have to eat a lot of jabs and right hands from Ellis.  Ellis is the more talented fighter and he will get off to a good start as he controls the action on his way to an eighth round stoppage victory.
