Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Obviously the biggest fight card last week was the on that aired on HBO pay-per-view.  The main event of that card was a bout between undefeated knockout artist Gennady Golovkin and cancer survivor Daniel Jacobs.  Most people though Golovkin would handle Jacobs fairly easily despite Jacobs arguably being the toughest test of his career.  "GGG" certainly didn't handle Jacobs easily, Jacobs did prove to be his toughest test.  Jacobs got off to a great start and his size and movement gave Golovkin problems.  In the fourth round though Golovkin caught Jacobs and sent him to the canvas, the only time either man would taste the canvas over 12 rounds.  When the final round began it looked like whoever won that round would win the fight and Golovkin was able to do both.  The scores were close but Golovkin was awarded the unanimous decision in a fight that certainly deserves a rematch.

  • Also on that HBO pay-per-view card was a bout between Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez and the relatively unknown Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.  Shockingly, Gonzalez was dropped in the first round but it appeared to be nothing more than a flash knockdown.  For the next few rounds Gonzalez didn't appear to be himself but slowly and surely worked his way back into the fight and started to take control.  In the sixth round Rungvisai lost a point for a headbutt and really from that point on Gonzalez's face was covered in blood, something that clearly swayed the judges.  As the rounds wore on Gonzalez seemed to get better and better in a fight that will certainly be a candidate for the 2017 Fight of the Year.  However, when the scores were announced it was Rungvisai who got the razor thin majority decision win, handing Gonzalez his first loss as a pro.  Most fans weren't happy with the decision and now Gonzalez can add another name to his list of potential rematches that already included Juan Francisco Estrada and Carlos Cuadras.

  • Speaking of Cuadras, he also fought on Saturday's HBO pay-per-view card against the tough David Carmona.  In previous fights Carmona didn't look to be on the same level as Cuadras but gave a very nice account of himself on Saturday.  Despite Cuadras controlling most of the early rounds, Carmona came on late to make it a close affair.  Carmona didn't do enough though as Cuadras won the fight by a close unanimous decision.  The opening fight on that card pit the undefeated Ryan Martin up against the one-loss Bryant Cruz.  Coming into the fight Martin was the favorite and he showed why he was the favorite by stopping Cruz in the eighth round.

  • On Friday night there were two cards in action, the more notable one airing on Bounce.  The main event of that PBC on Bounce card was a heavyweight fight between Travis Kauffman and Amir Mansour.  Kauffman was able to get out to a nice start but as the fight wore on his stamina was clearly an issue as he fought with his mouth open, breathing heavily for long stretches.  Mansour was also breathing heavily but he was doing more work in the ring despite being 13 years older that Kauffman.  Although Kauffman was the hometown fighter so Mansour couldn't expect to win a close fight, he did just that, getting the majority decision win in a fight that included a candidate for the 2017 Round of the Year for the final round.  Also on that card was a very disappointing fight between veteran Kermit Cintron and David Grayton.  It wasn't the most visually pleasing fight despite the fact that both fighters were doing pretty well.  Then in the fifth round Cintron caught a headbutt and was ruled unable to continue after talking to the ringside doctor.  Not really wanting to continue has become a familiarity for Cintron and he lucked out again when the fight was ruled a draw.

  • Friday's other card aired on Telemundo and the main event ended very quickly.  That fight, between Sammy Valentin and Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez, didn't even make it to the second round.  In the first round a short right hand from Valentin hurt Rodriguez and a flurry of punches, including a left hook and another right hand, would end things and keep Valentin's perfect record intact.

  • There was also action on Tuesday night when the PBC aired another card on Fox Sports 1.  In the main event of that card the undefeated power puncher Sergiy Derevyachenko  took on fellow undefeated puncher Kemahl Russell.  Only one fighter would keep his perfect record intact and that was Derevyachenko when a flurry of punches landed on Russell while he was up against the ropes in the fifth round and the fight was stopped by the referee.
