Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Last week kicked off with a fight card on Fox Sports 1.  That card was headlined by a bout between Sammy Vazquez and Luis Collazo, who both needed a win.  While Vazquez looked to rebound from a loss to Felix Diaz, Collazo was trying to rebound from a stoppage loss to Keith Thurman.  On Thursday it was Collazo who would prevail.  Vazquez looked like his usual exciting self during stretches of the fight but also spent a bit too much time on the ropes.  In the third round Collazo caught Vazquez with a short right hand that dropped him.  While Vazquez recovered from that knockout he couldn't turn things around.  In the sixth round, in the center of the ring, Collazo caught Vazquez with another perfect short right hook that dropped and stopped Vazquez in what is another early contender for the 2017 Knockout of the Year.

  • Also on that PBC on FS1 card was a bout between Yordenis Ugas and Levan Ghvamichava.  The fight looked to be fairly even on paper and for the most part it was.  However, as the rounds wore on it became clear that Ugas was doing a bit more and despite being deducted a point late in the fight for a low-blow, Ugas was able to box his way to a split decision victory.  Opening the card was a bout between Ryan "Cowboy" Karl and Eddie Ramirez.  While Karl had previously gotten some television time it was Ramirez who brought the heavier hands and sharper skills into the ring.  Early in the fight Ramirez was really touching up Karl and looked like he may stop him early.  However, Karl was able to right the ship for a time and survived those early rounds.  That wouldn't last too long though as Karl's corner stopped the fight after the ninth round because Ramirez was putting a real hurting on their man.

  • On Friday top prospect Felix Verdejo made his ring return following a bad motorcycle accident that briefly hospitalized him.  Verdejo took on Oliver Flores, a fighter who had been knocked out early by the two best opponents he had faced.  While many expected Verdejo to do the same, he once again fought down to the level of his competition and failed to impress despite getting the unanimous decision win.  Verdejo did remain undefeated but if he doesn't start impressing again very soon people will start writing him off as a bust.

  • Saturday's only action came on beIN Sports Espanol.  That fight card was headlined by a fight between Jackie Nava and Ana Marie Lozano.  Nava, one of women's boxing's best, entered the fight as the favorite and she showed why when the opening bell rang.  Nava was able to control the action throughout the 10-round fight and when the scores were announced she was awarded the unanimous decision win.  Also on that card was a bout between two young power punchers in Jaime Munguia and Juan Macias Montiel.  On paper the fight looked like it would be a pretty even one, but it was anything but that.  Instead Munguia took care of business very early.  When Montiel let loose with a mile-wide left hook Munguia unleashed a right hand of his own that caught Montiel and ended the fight.
