PBC on FS1 Quick Picks

Sammy Vasquez vs. Luis Collazo: On Thursday night the PBC will return to FS1.  The 10-round main event of that card will feature two fighters looking for redemption following recent losses.  Sammy Vasquez (21-1, 15 KO) is fresh off the first loss of his career which came against Felix Diaz.  Vasquez was outclassed in that fight and the loss really knocked him down a few rungs on the ladder.  Vasquez will be in the ring against Luis Collazo (36-7, 19 KO) who is coming off a loss to Keith Thurman and the two men will meet in the welterweight division.  However, Collazo did badly hurt Thurman to the body in that fight before retiring in his corner.  Vasquez is a southpaw boxer-puncher who likes to mix things up in the ring.  Vasquez usually keeps his hands fairly low and he likes to use his jab as a measuring stick for his power punches.  Those power punches come in the form of a strong right hook and a nice straight left hand.  While Vasquez was on his way to a title shot and was becoming a fan favorite on television he still wasn't the most polished prospect and it will be interesting to see what improvements he has made since suffering that first loss of his career.  Meanwhile, Collazo has lost two of his last three fights but they came against very good fighters in Amir Khan and Keith Thurman.  Collazo also plies his trade out of the southpaw stance but he doesn't carry as much power as Vasquez does.  In his prime Collazo was a slick defensive-minded fighter but his legs are not what they used to be.  Collazo likes to work behind a busy jab and behind it will work a right hook to the body.  His best punch though is probably his left hand which can do damage upstairs.  While Vasquez turned pro in 2012, Collazo has been fighting professionally since 2000 and has faced a much higher level of opposition than Vasquez has.  Vasquez can't afford another loss and Collazo is never an easy out for anyone but Vasquez's punch output and power should be enough to get him the unanimous decision victory.

Yordenis Ugas vs. Levan Ghvamichava: Thursday's co-feature will be a 10-round bout between Cuban Yordenis Ugas (17-3, 8 KO) and Georgian Levan Ghvamichava (17-2-1, 13 KO) from the welterweight division.  At 30 years old Ugas is fresh off the two best wins of his career and is looking to become a title contender.  Ghvamichava meanwhile is 31 years old and he is fresh off an impressive stoppage victory over Breidis Prescott.  Ugas is an orthodox fighter who likes to work behind his jab.  That jab helps set up a pretty good right hand and while he will try to bang the left hook to the body he isn't great with the left hand.  Ghvamichava is also an orthodox fighter and he has much more pop on his punches than Ugas does.  He goes by the nickname "The Wolf" and that may be because he happens to be the hairiest man in the sport.  Ghvamichava is a counter puncher by trade and he has a sharp left hook upstairs and to the body and along with that left hook he also has a strong overhand right.  However, Ghvamichava doesn't move as well in the ring as Ugas does and likes to spend most of his time trading leather from the pocket.  If Ugas gets on his bike he could stick and move his way to a victory but in this fight Ghvamichava will be able to put in some good work and his heavier punchers will factor in to his majority decision win.

Ryan Karl vs. Eddie Ramirez: The first bout on Thurday's PBC triple-header will be a battle of two young fighters, both with solid pop on their punches and no losses on their resumes.  Ryan Karl (13-0, 9 KO) and Eddie Ramirez (15-0, 10 KO) are scheduled to go 10 rounds from the junior welterweight division and someone will suffer their first loss, or in the case of a draw, their first blemish.  Karl is an orthodox fighter who likes to mix things up with a fan friendly style.  He works behind a stiff jab and often brings a solid right hand behind it.  While the left hook and ring generalship could still use some work Karl is a nice looking prospect who has already found himself on television on numerous occasions.  Ramirez is also an orthodox fighter but he will be giving up two inches in height and five inches in reach to Karl.  Offensively Ramirez is a good looking fighter who carries a solid jab along with a strong left hook and right hand.  The uppercut is also one of Ramirez's best weapons and this could be a very fun fight for the fans.  While this fight should be incredibly close because both fighters have similar styles it is Ramirez who is the sharper puncher and he will squeak by Karl for the split decision win.
