Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Not much out of the ordinary happened in the boxing world last week, unless you consider Luis Ortiz not scoring a knockout out of the ordinary.  Ortiz took on veteran Malik Scott on HBO and what was supposed to be a fight that showcased Scott's talent turned into a snooze fest.  From the opening bell it was clear that Scott had no interest in fighting and simply showed up to collect his paycheck and survive until the final bell.  Scott would occasionally let his hands go but his spent the majority of the fight running.  Meanwhile, Ortiz failed to adapt and did not do a good job of cutting off the ring or forcing Scott to stand and fight.  Instead of working his jab and staying busy Ortiz looked to land the homerun punch that never came.  While Ortiz got the mile-wide unanimous decision win it won't be a win that helps advance his career.

  • The only other card last week was a PBC card on Spike which was headlined by Danny Garcia.  Garcia took a tune-up fight before his scheduled March bout against Keith Thurman.  That tune-up fight came against Samuel Vargas who was no match for Garcia.  Vargas was dropped in the first round and stopped in the seventh.  Still it was a fight fans didn't want to see and many felt that Garcia didn't need another tune-up after already having similar type fights with Paulie Malignaggi and Robert Guerrero.

  • Two other fights also aired on Saturday's PBC on Spike card.  Those fights included a bout between Jarrett Hurd and Jo Jo Dan.  Dan, the veteran fighter was supposed to be a good test for the fast rising prospect Hurd.  However, Hurd showed himself to be the superior fighter as he stopped Dan in the sixth round.  In the opening bout Javier Fortuna took on the undefeated Omar Douglas in an important bout for both fighters.  Fortuna was looking to erase the recent memory of being knocked out late to lose his title but was dropped in the opening round against Douglas.  However, Fortuna recovered nicely and boxed his way to a unanimous decision win, giving Douglas his first career loss.
