Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Last week was a very busy one for boxing and no bout was bigger than the one between Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas on Top Rank pay-per-view.  Pacquiao was coming back from a brief retirement while Vargas was coming off the biggest win of his career and bringing his WBO belt into the ring.  From the start it was clear that Pacquiao was the better fighter and he dropped Vargas in the second round.  While Pacquiao controlled the fight it wasn't a total blowout and Vargas actually gave a good account of himself and caught Pacquiao with a number of power punches that buzzed the veteran pugilist.  However when all was said and done it was Pacquiao, who as many expected, came away with the unanimous decision win.

  • Also on that Top Rank card was rising star Oscar Valdez.  Valdez took on the relatively unknown Hiroshige Osawa and had no problem at any point in the fight.  Valdez dropped Osawa in the fourth round and he looked to be on the verge of stopping him multiple times before finally doing so in the seventh round, keeping his record perfect.  Another fight on that card was a competitive one between Nonito Donaire and Jessie Magdaleno.  The fight was a close one but it was Magdaleno who was the busier fighter and that paid off as he was awarded the unanimous decision win while also leaving the ring with Donaire's WBO World super bantamweight title.  The first fight on that card featured Zou Shiming taking on Prasitsak Papoem in a rematch of their 2014 fight that Shiming won.  This time around was more of the same as Shiming won by unanimous decision, claiming a vacant WBO World title in the process.

  • There was also plenty of action on Friday night.  It started off on Showtime with another edition of ShoBox: The New Generation.  That card was headlined by a bout between Taras Shelestyuk and Jaime Herrera.  Shelestyuk was hoping for a breakout performance that may have helped him secure a fight with a top opponent.  Instead Shelestyuk did enough to win but didn't impress all that much.  He was good enough to beat Herrera by the way of unanimous decision but he didn't have the breakout performance he was hoping for.  Also on that card was a fight between two undefeated cruiserweights in Constantin Bejenaru and Stivens Bujaj.  Despite bring dropped in the fifth round Bejenaru used his aggression and movement to beat Bujaj by the way of unanimous decision.

  • Also in action last Friday was Manuel "Tino" Avila.  He appeared in the main event of an Estrella TV card and took on Jose Ramirez.  Despite being viewed as a top prospect, Avila had a difficult time with Ramirez who had previously been beaten easily by other prospects such as Vasyl Lomachenko, Abner Mares, and Oscar Valdez.  For Avila it wasn't so easy and while he did come away with the split decision win it certainly wasn't a performance that will help his career.

  • There was also a card on UniMas last week and that card was headlined by a bout between Casey Ramos and Andy Vences.  The fight was relatively close but it seemed that Vences was getting the better of most of the action.  In the ninth round Ramos was cut by an accidental headbutt and the fight was stopped and sent to the cards.  Not surprisingly it was Vences who was awarded the win, getting it by the way of unanimous decision.
