Weekend Wrap-Up

  • There wasn't a single elite, or even near elite, fighter in action last week.  While the week lacked any high profile fights there was plenty of second tier action to keep fans happy.  That action started on Tuesday with a PBC on Fox Sports 1 card headlined by a bout between Bryant Perrella and Yordenis Ugas.  While Perrella entered the fight as the undefeated prospect, he wouldn't leave that way.  Ugas, the veteran from Cuba, dropped Perrella for the first time in his career in the opening round and did so again in the fourth round.  That knockdown in the fourth round would end the fight giving Ugas the impressive win.

  • On Friday CBS Sports aired a card headlined by Mike Lee, perhaps best known for his participation in Subway commercials despite never having won a major fight.  Lee took on Chris Traietti in a bout scheduled to go 10 rounds.  Lee, who entered the fight with a perfect record, dropped Traietti in the second round and never looked back from there.  For the rest of the fight Lee would easily handle Traietti on his way to a wide unanimous decision.

  • Also on Friday was a card on Telemundo.  The main event of that card featured Alejandro Hernandez taking on Emmanuel Dominguez.  The experience advantage that Hernandez had was no help against the much younger Dominguez and it only took Dominguez four rounds to knockout Hernandez.  That gave Dominguez perhaps the biggest win of his young career.

  • Arguably the best fight of the weekend, at least on paper, was the bout between Petr Petrov and Michael Perez.  Both fighters have shown their skills on big stages before and it looked like a pretty even fight going in.  The fight was a brutal one with both fighters suffering cuts from clashes of heads, and Perez actually suffered multiple cuts.  In the second round Petrov was able to drop Perez and he really went to work on him for six rounds.  After the six round ended the fighters went to their respective corners but only Petrov would answer the bell for the seventh round.  Perez never left his stool, giving Petrov the sixth round stoppage victory.

  • Saturday only had one fight that televised in the U.S. and that card was in Spanish on the network beIN Sports Espanol.  The main event of that card featured veteran Humberto Soto taking on Daniel Ruiz.  Ruiz had not been doing very well as of late and that wouldn't change on Saturday night as Soto had an easy time, winning the fight with a second round stoppage.
