Weekend Wrap-Up

  • As with most weeks featuring a top fighter on a pay-per-view card the week leading up to that card was a very busy one.  No fight was bigger than the HBO pay-per-view main event though and that fight featured Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Liam Smith.  Alvarez moved back down to junior middleweight to challenge Smith for his WBO title.  While Smith was able to give a good account of himself he lacked the punching power necessary to hurt Alvarez.  Alvarez put in a lot of good work to the body and that body work would pay off when Alvarez connected with a left hook to the liver of Smith in round nine.  Smith dropped to the canvas and didn't get up as the fight waved his arms, signaling Alvarez's victory.

  • The undercard of that HBO pay-per-view card was not one that had many fans excited.  Most of the fights had clear favorites and those favorites came through.  First Diego De La Hoya cruised to a mile wide unanimous decision victory over Luis Orlando Del Valle and then Joseph Diaz easily handled Andrew Cancio before stopping him in the ninth round.  The co-feature wasn't much better as Willie Monroe Jr. took on tough veteran Gabriel Rosado.  Monroe proved to be too skilled and too slick for the slower Rosado who could never mount much of an attack.  That fight would go the distance with Monroe getting the unanimous decision win.

  • On Friday Bounce TV aired a PBC card headlined by a fight between Ishe Smith and Frank Galarza.  It was a close fight throughout but a second round knockdown scored by Smith would be the difference.  When the official scores were read Smith was awarded the majority decision win.  However, had he not scored that early knockdown the fight would have ended in a majority draw.  Also on that card was a bout featuring Justin DeLoach and Domonique Dolton.  While neither fighter looked spectacular it was DeLoach who put in the better work and it was DeLoach who would win the fight by the way of unanimous decision.

  • Early in the week prospect Dusty Hernandez-Harrison took on Thomas Lamanna on CBS Sports.  That fight was pretty even on paper but if Hernandez-Harrison is the prospect people think he is it was a fight he needed to win.  While he never fully took control Hernandez-Harrison did do enough to come away with the unanimous decision win.

  • The first fight of last week was on Tuesday when the PBC aired a card on Fox Sports 1.  The main event of that card was a bout between Eddie Ramirez and Kevin Watts.  Ramirez, who entered the fight with a perfect record would leave with that perfect record intact.  Despite being dropped in the second round Ramirez would come back to knockout Watts in the seventh round.
