Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Nearly every fighter who was supposed to win last week did just that, although that doesn't mean they looked great doing it.  The biggest fight of last week was between Gennady Golovkin and Kell Brook on HBO.  Brook, who was moving up in weight, looked good early and was consistently able to catch Golovkin and even seemed to hurt the middleweight champion on a few occasions.  In the middle rounds Golovkin started to land more of his power punches and soon it became clear that Brook wouldn't last very long.  In the fifth round with Brook eating punches his corner threw in the towel.  After the fight it was revealed that Brook has broken his eye socket earlier in the fight, making the stoppage a smart one.

  • The fight between Gennady Golovkin and Kell Brook wasn't the only fight on HBO last week.  Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez also moved up in weight to challenge Carlos Cuadras and did not have an easy time with the bigger man.  Gonzalez, who usually breaks down opponents looked broken down himself by the end of the fight and both of his eyes were badly swollen.  Cuadras seemed to buzz Gonzalez a few times and he also handled Gonzalez's power well.  Despite his face Gonzalez did get the better of the exchanges for most of the fight and he came away with the unanimous decision win.  Also on that card was a rematch between Yoshihiro Kamegai and Jesus Soto Karass who already turned in a Fight of the Year candidate earlier this year.  Their first fight was extremely close and ended in a draw and this fight started out in the same fashion.  That was until Kamegai started to take over in the middle rounds.  In the eighth round Kamegai dropped Soto Karass who would retire on his stool between rounds giving Kamegai the win.

  • Also on Saturday night was a heavyweight bout between prospect Andy Ruiz and veteran Franklin Lawrence.  Ruiz was unable to knock the veteran Lawrence out but he did completely dominate the fight for its entirety.  When the scores were announced Ruiz won every round on one judges scorecard and nine rounds on the other two judges cards, giving him the wide unanimous decision win.  The win also helped Ruiz secure a fight with Hughie Fury in October.

  • On Friday another rematch occurred, this one between Daniel Jacobs and Sergio Mora on a PBC on Spike card.  Their first fight ended in the second round when Mora went down and injured his ankle but the first round of that fight nearly won the 2016 Round of the Year award because both fighters got dropped.  This time around only Mora would taste the canvas and he was down a total of five times, the last of which ended the fight in the seventh round.  After the win the WBA ordered a fight between Jacobs and Gennady Golovkin and that fight would certainly be one filled with a lot of punches thrown with bad intentions.  Also on that card was a bout between prospects Richard Commey and Robert Easter.  The fight was very close and despite being knocked down in the eighth round Easter was able to escape with a split decision victory.

  • Friday's other card aired on CBS Sports with Emmanuel Robles taking on Steve Claggett.  Claggett entered the fight as the underdog but he was able to get the better of most of the exchanges in what turned out to be a very close fight.  When the scores were announced it was Claggett who was awarded the split decision win.
