Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The big name in action last week was Andre Ward who fought on Saturday on HBO against another opponent who entered the ring as a heavy underdog.  That underdog was Alexander Brand who most gave no shot at upsetting the favorite.  Well the fight played out as most expected it to as Ward won every round on all three judges scorecards on his way to a boring win that told us nothing.  However, the win did set up a mega-fight with fellow top five pound-for-pound fighter Sergey Kovalev.  Also on that card was a bout between Maurice Hooker and Ty Barnett.  The fight wasn't televised on HBO but was covered by Big Time Boxing.  Barnett came into the fight overweight and clearly he was not ready to put in any work because Hooker knocked him out in the very first round.

  • Also on action last week, on UniMas, was Juan Diaz.  Diaz is still working his way to another lightweight title shot and he took on Cesar Vazquez and looked pretty good en route to an eighth round stoppage win.  The lightweight division is not usually the best but with names like Diaz, Mikey Garcia, and Felix Verdejo in the mix it could get very interesting this year and next.

  • Another impressive performance was turned in by Rob Brant who fought Chris Fitzpatrick on CBS Sports.  Brant remained undefeated and turned in his third strong performance in a row when he knocked out Fitzpatrick in the third round to keep his perfect record intact.

  • Last week's PBC on ESPN card was headlined by undefeated prospect David Benavidez.  Benavidez took on Denis Douglin and looked good.  Benavidez dropped Douglin in the ninth round and then stopped him in the final round, keeping his record a perfect one.  The other fight on that card was between Alejandro Luna and Naim Nelson, a last minute replacement for Stephen Ormond.  Luna looked as good as anticipated winning a wide unanimous decision.

  • The most under the radar bouts of last week came on Estrella TV.  The main event of that card was a bout between Carlos Morales and Luis Franco.  Franco was supposed to be a tough test for the young Morales, and he was.  The fight was close throughout but it was clear that Morales was getting the better of the action and when the scores were announced he was given a close unanimous decision win.  Also on that card was a bout between Joet Gonzalez and Sergio Lopez.  Gonzalez, an undefeated 22-year-old prospect, was able to beat Lopez by the way of unanimous decision in a fight that was never really close.
