Weekend Wrap-Up

  • At the very least last week was an exciting one for boxing.  The action kicked off on Friday night with another edition of Showtime's ShoBox: The New Generation.  Heavyweight prospect Jarrell Miller headlined that card and took on Fred Kassi.  Kassi was supposed to be Miller's toughest test to date but he didn't even make it to the fourth round.  In the third round Miller really started to hurt Kassi who looked like he was about to drop, then between rounds Kassi complained of a hand injury and his corner stopped the contest.  While it might not have been the finish fans wanted to see it seemed that Kassi getting stopped was a sure thing anyway.  Miller has the personality to be a star and if he keeps winning he may get there.  Also on that card was a bout between Mason Menard and Bahodir Mamadjonov.  Menard had already provided fans with a brutal knockout this year and scored another one when he dropped Mamadjonov twice in the seventh round and knocked him out in the ninth.  It now seems like Menard is ready for tougher tests.

  • While there was nothing wrong with the outcomes of the main event and co-feature of Showtime's ShoBox: The New Generation card fans could argue over the validity of the outcomes of the two opening bouts.  One of those bouts was between Bakhtiyar Eyubov and Karim Mayfield.  It was a close fight throughout but many fans thought that Mayfield deserved the decision.  Instead when the scores were announced it was Eyubov who got the disputed split decision win.  Another split decision that many fans were upset about was the fight between Antonio Nieves and Alejandro Santiago.  Santiago put in a lot of good work and seemed to out hustle Nieves.  However, when the scores were announced it was Nieves who came away with the split decision win.

  • On Saturday while some people were watching UFC, hardcore boxing junkies were probably tuned in to beIN Sports Espanol.  That card was headlined by Carlos Ocampo, who entered the fight against Alvaro Robles as an undefeated fighter.  Ocampo looked very good against Ocampo and nearly stopped him in the final round.  However, Ocampo failed to stop Robles and punched himself out and had to survive the final few minutes as Robles landed some serious power punches.  Ocampo would survive though and win the fight by the way of unanimous decision.  Also on that card was knockout artist Jose Uzcategui.  Uzcategui took on Fabiano Pena and wasted no time in dispatching him.  Uzcategui floored Pena twice in the second round, the second of which ended the fight.

  • One of the biggest names in action last week was Errol Spence Jr. who fought on Sunday on a PBC card which aired on NBC.  Spence took on veteran Leonard Bundu who most remember from his unanimous decision loss to Keith Thurman.  Spence, who looks like he is on his way to superstar status did something that no fighter has ever done before, knockout Bundu.  Spence was able to drop the veteran fighter a few times and he finished him off in the sixth round.  It was a big statement for a young fighter looking for his first title shot.
