Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Obviously the biggest fight of last week was the featherweight title fight on Showtime between the defending champion Leo Santa Cruz and the challenger, moving up in weight, Carl Frampton.  The fight was very close throughout and also packed with action from the opening bell until the final round.  Both fighters had their moments but it seemed that Frampton was landing the cleaner punches, although Santa Cruz was busier.  However, Santa Cruz didn't fight very intelligently and often gave up his height and reach advantage by staying in the pocket, leaning forward, and attacking.  This allowed Frampton to catch him clean throughout the fight and when the scores were announced it was Frampton who walked away with the title getting the win via majority decision.  In this fight though no one really lost because it will be a contender for Fight of the Year and with the win Frampton is now in the running for Fighter of the Year.

  • That Showtime card was actually a tripleheader and the other fights on that card were between Mikey Garcia and Elio Rojas and Tony Harrison and Sergey Rabchenko.  For Garcia this was his first fight in over two years and many expected that he might show some significant ring rust.  Instead Garcia looked like he hadn't lost a step.  Garcia studied Rojas for the first few rounds and then began to attack.  In total Garcia dropped Rojas four times, twice in the third and twice more in the fifth on his way to a stoppage win.  Also impressive was the performance turned in by Harrison.  Unlike Santa Cruz in the main event Harrison used his advantages very well.  He stayed on the outside and controlled the shorter Rabchenko with his jab and ultimately stopped him in the ninth round.

  • Another big name in action last week was Adonis Stevenson, who took on the dangerous but very vulnerable Thomas Williams Jr. on a PBC on Spike card.  Like has happened before Williams was dropped in the opening round.  He recovered nicely though and was able to get Stevenson's attention with a number of clean hard punches.  However, Williams all or nothing style would let him down as Stevenson caught him and knocked him out in the fourth round in what will be a contender for Knockout of the Year.  Also on that card was a bout between Eleider Alvarez and Robert Berridge in which Alvarez was able to win fairly easily by the way of unanimous decision.

  • HBO Latino also provided fans with some action when they aired a card headlined by a bout between Antonio Orozco and Abner Lopez.  Orozco entered the fight as the favorite but Lopez gave a good account of himself and had Orozco in some precarious situations all night.  Despite not looking his best, when the fight ended it was Orozco who came away with the unanimous decision victory.  Also on that card was top prospect Joseph Diaz who took on Victor Proa.  Diaz had said that he wanted to showcase his power and he did just that, knocking Proa out in only the second round.

  • The final action last week took place on beIN Sports Espanol.  In the main event of that card Luis Nery remained perfect by breaking down and stopping David Sanchez in the fourth round.
