PBC on Spike Quick Picks

Robert Guerrero vs. David Peralta: This Saturday on Spike the PBC will air three fights, with the main event being headlined by Robert Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KO).  Guerrero is set to take on David Peralta (25-2-1, 14 KO) in a bout scheduled to go 10 rounds in the welterweight division.  Once a top fighter Guerrero has fallen off in recent years and is now used as a tough veteran for fighters moving up in weight like Danny Garcia.  In his last five fights Guerrero is 2-3 but that record could easily be 1-4 as his split decision win over Aaron Martinez could have easily gone Martinez's way.  Guerrero, who fights out of the southpaw stance is not nearly as slick as he was in his lightweight days.  More recently Guerrero seems happy to stand and trade punches in the pocket.  Offensively Guerrero has a good jab and a nice straight left hand, however, most of his damage comes from uppercuts with both hands on the inside.  The problem for Guerrero though is now on defense where he eats way too many clean punches.  Against Peralta, Guerrero will have the experience advantage because Peralta has never faced any real top tier talents.  Head clashes could play a role in this fight since Peralta is an orthodox fighter and the southpaw Guerrero loves to fight from the pocket.  While he doesn't jab much Peralta does have a good left hook and a short right hand that can do damage.  This fight should come down to class though and as class tells over time Guerrero will pull away late and win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.

Alfredo Angulo vs. Freddy Hernandez: Saturday's co-feature will be a match up of two ageing fighters looking to make one last run at glory.  Those fighters are Alfredo Angulo (24-5, 20 KO) and Freddy Hernandez (33-8, 22 KO).  The 34-year-old Angulo and 37-year-old Hernandez are scheduled to go 10 rounds from the super middleweight division, new territory for both men who usually fight as a junior middleweight or middleweight.  Angulo has won two fights in a row but that followed three losses in a row and his record in his last five fights is 2-3.  As for Hernandez who has won three fights in a row but those wins followed six losses in a row and in his last 11 fights he has a record of 4-7.  Both men have faced top fighters in the past though with Angulo taking on Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, Erislandy Lara, and James Kirkland.  While Hernandez has been in the ring with Julian Williams, Demetrius Andrade, Erislandy Lara, Luis Collazo, and Andre Berto.  However, neither fighter has done well against top opponents.  Not too long ago Angulo seemed like an absolute killer.  He had great power and was ultra aggressive, but a tough stoppage loss to James Kirkland and a stint in a detention center due to immigration issues seem to have taken their toll on the once promising career.  Angulo fights out of the orthodox stance and he is a very aggressive attacker.  He will jab as a range finder but most of his best work comes from his left hook and heavy right hand.  While Angulo's hands are now very slow, they still land with a thud and in a toe-to-toe battle he can still do some damage.  Hernandez is also an orthodox fighter and while he has some power it is nowhere near the power of Angulo.  Hernandez has a long jab and a nice straight right hand but at times he seems reluctant to punch, which may be because he has a very bad chin.  In his eight career losses Hernandez has been stopped four times and Angulo has been stopped three times in his five career losses.  Both men should fight hungry because both really need a win to stay at all relevant.  As long as Angulo can stay on the inside and consistently touch Hernandez up he should win this fight with a seventh round stoppage.

Terrell Gausha vs. Steve Martinez: The opening bout of Saturday's PBC card will pit former 2012 Olympian Terrell Gausha (18-0, 9 KO) up against Steve Martinez (16-2, 13 KO).  That fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds from the junior middleweight division where the 28-year-old Gausha needs to hurry up and make a splash.  Gausha has been brought along slowly and while that is smart at his age he needs to start stepping up if he ever wants a title shot.  As for Martinez he has good power but he usually only beats average or sub par fighters and has lost to the two best opponents he has faced, neither of them being anywhere near elite.  Gausha is an orthodox fighter with a stiff jab he likes to work behind.  That jab is a nice weapon for Gausha who moves well around the ring and he also carries a very nice straight right hand.  Martinez is also an orthodox fighter and on the inside he does a great job of banging to the body with his left hook.  Martinez also has a strong right hand but he tends to stand right in front of opponents and he squares up way too much.  This fight could come down to the jab and movement of Gausha against the power of Martinez.  Because he will play it safe and stay on the outside where he can control things with his jab Gausha will win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.
