beIN Sports Quick Picks

Antonio Margarito vs. Ramon Alvarez: At 38 years of age Antonio Margarito (39-8, 27 KO) continues his comeback from a gruesome eye injury and an infamous cheating scandal.  That comeback started after a four-plus year exodus from the sport, mainly due to surgeries on his badly damaged right eye, when Margarito took on Jorge Paez Jr..  Despite winning that fight Margarito was dropped and showed that his skills are nowhere near what they once were.  On Saturday Margarito will continue his comeback against Ramon Alvarez (23-4-2, 15 KO) the older brother of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.  The pair is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the junior middleweight division with the fight being aired on beIN Sports and beIN Sports Espanol.  In his prime Margarito was a forced to be reckoned with.  Not only did he have power but he was an aggressive fighter who made fan friendly fights.  Margarito is a tall orthodox fighter who still has a stiff jab.  Also, Margarito has a strong left hook and a right hand that can do damage but he tends to be a wild puncher.  Margarito doesn't mind mixing things up on the inside and he likes to trade heavy leather.  However, against Paez he showed that he doesn't move as well as he used to, and he never moved that well, and also that some of the pop his been taken off his punches.  Whether that loss of top end power is due to age and a long layoff or the fact that in the past he has used loaded gloves is unknown but there is no denying his power is not the same.  One big advantage Margarito has over Alvarez is experience.  Margarito has been fighting professionally since 1994 while Alvarez turned pro in 2008.  Also, Margarito has faced off with top fighters like Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, and Paul Williams while Alvarez's best opponent was probably Omar Chavez.  Alvarez is also an orthodox fighter and he will give up a lot of height and reach to the taller, longer Margarito.  Alvarez has a classic style that sees him fight behind a good jab.  Along with that jab Alvarez has a stiff straight right hand and a good looking left hook to the body.  As far as skills go right now these fighters are pretty close.  However, Alvarez has been fighting more consistently and has been looking good.  Certainly Ramon is not the best fighting Alvarez brother but he will be good enough to beat Margarito by the way of unanimous decision.

Pedro Campa vs. David Bency: The other fight scheduled to air on beIN Sports and beIN Sports Espanol will be headlined by a heavy hitting, undefeated prospect by the name of Pedro Campa (21-0, 16 KO).  Campa will be challenged by David Bency (10-5-1, 4 KO) who is really just being brought in as an opponent to make Campa look good.  At this point in the young career of Campa he isn't being throw into the deep water yet, although he has been slowly stepping up his level of competition.  Campa is a 24-year-old who plies his trade out of the orthodox stance.  Not only does Campa have good power but he also has quick hands and a good jab.  Along with that jab Campa also has a strong left hook and solid right hand and if he can continue improving with each fight he is someone to keep an eye on.  One thing that can be said for Bency is that he stays busy.  Since the start of 2015 bency has fought nine times going 8-1 with three knockouts.  However, most of his opponents where not very good.  Bency is also an orthodox fighter but he lacks any real power.  He has somewhat of an awkward style and he likes to throw a lot of one-two combinations from the outside but on the inside he will focus on the body with left hooks and right hands.  The problem for Bency is that most of his punches would be best described as "looping" and his defense isn't great.  With the way Bency puts his punches together and forgets about defense this could be a short night of work for Campa.  It won't come right away but Campa will stop Bency in the seventh round to remain undefeated.
