Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Without a doubt the biggest fight of last week was the junior welterweight unification bout between Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol on HBO pay-per-view.  What was supposed to be a closely contested competitive fight was anything but.  As usual Crawford got off to a slow start while he studied his opponents habits and then he began to go to work.  In the fifth round Crawford dropped Postol twice and cruised to a wide unanimous decision win after that.  While it wasn't the most exciting fight it did show that Crawford can easily handle a skilled boxer with a height and reach advantage.

  • The undercard fights of HBO's pay-per-view card turned out to be much more exciting than the main event.  Oscar Valdez shined in his role as the co-feature and he was able to stop his opponent in the second round.  That opponent was the power-punching Matias Rueda and Valdez dropped him twice in the second round, the second of which ended the fight.  Also on the undercard was a fight between Jose Benavidez Jr. and Francisco Santana.  That fight was a battle between the skills of Benavidez and the will of Santana.  While Benavidez started fast he faded in the middle rounds as he spent way too much time on the ropes and let Santana get in some good work.  Although it was a very close fight Benavidez was awarded the unanimous decision win.  While the decision wasn't a terrible one some of the scorecards were.  Judge Adalaide Byrd scored every single round for Benavidez 100-90 and judge Glenn Feldman's score of 98-92 wasn't much better.  The first fight of the night was a battle between Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk and the tough American Tommy Karpency.  Despite being dropped and seriously hurt in the opening round Gzovdyk was able to come back strong and he stopped Karpency in the sixth round.
  • Earlier fights in the week included a bout between Adam Lopez and Roman Reynoso on Showtime.  Lopez entered the fight as an undefeated prospect but he did not look sharp against the one loss Reynoso and when the scores were announced the fight was ruled a draw.
  • Last week's action kicked off on Thursday night with a PBC on ESPN card.  That card was headlined by a bout between Sergiy Derevyachenki and Sam Soliman.  Soliman, an awkward veteran who was supposed to be a tough test for Derevyachenko was aything but.  From the start it was clear that Soliman didn't have much left and Derevyachenko dropped him once in the opening round and twice in the second round, the second of which ended the fight.  The opening bout of that card featured Ievgen Khytrov and Paul Mendez.  Khytrov looked good and was able to remain perfect by stopping Mendez in the ninth round.
