Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The last few weeks have not been great ones for boxing fans.  There haven't been many top tier fighters in action and there hasn't been many competitive fights.  That changed this week, a week that saw top fighters in action as well as a number of competitive fights.  The biggest name going last week was Deontay Wilder.  Wilder took on the past his prime Chris Arreola in a heavyweight title fight on Fox.  Despite in injured right hand and biceps Wilder was able to floor Arreola in the fourth round and Wilder's corner threw in the towel following the eighth round.  While Wilder was sloppy at times, as usual, his jab was excellent and he fought, and won, essentially as a one-handed fighter.

  • Also on that Fox card was a very intriguing fight between Sammy Vasquez and Felix Diaz.  Originally Vasquez was supposed to take on veteran Luis Collazo, but a late injury brought Diaz to the table.  While Vasquez found some early success it wouldn't last.  Diaz showed he was the superior boxer and really picked Vasquez apart in the middle and late rounds.  Perhaps the most dramatic moment of the fight came post-fight when the scores were announced.  Despite many feeling that Diaz had clearly won the score was ruled a draw.  Then minutes later the scores were re-tabulated because a mistake had been made and Diaz was correctly ruled the victor.

  • The other fight on Saturday aired on beIN Sports Espanol.  That fight was headlined by Miguel Berchelt and Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo.  Berchelt had put together eight wins in a row, all by knockout follow the only loss of his career in 2014.  On Saturday night Berchelt ran that number to nine wins in a row with nine knockouts.  While the finishing punch was a left hook to the body the damage had already been done with a big left hook upstairs that floored Piriyapinyo and left him badly hurt.

  • Friday was a busy one for the sport with three fight cards going.  The highest profile of them was a PBC card on ESPN headlined by Sergey Lipinets.  Lipinets took on Walter Castillo and despite a deep cut over his eye that left him vulnerable Lipinets was able to close the show and score a seventh round stoppage.  The other fight on that card was between the unbeaten Tugstsogt Nyambayar and Rafael Vazquez.  Nyambayar entered the fight with a 5-0 record that included five knockouts.  After Friday he moved to 6-0 with six knockouts to remain perfect.

  • Another one of Friday's fights took place on Estrella TV.  The main event of that card was a bout between Jayson Velez and Rene Alvarado.  Both fighters were in desperate needs of wins since both had lost back-to-back fights.  While the fight was close it was Alvarado who got the better of the action and he was awarded the split decision win by the judges.

  • The final fight on Friday took place near Orlando, FL.  Orlando was the location of a recent mass shooting at a gay nightclub so it was fitting that Orlando Cruz, an openly gay man and activist was the headliner.  Cruz took on Alex Valdez and said he would be dedicating the fight to victims of the shooting.  The action was close but eventually Cruz was able to knock Valdez out in the seventh round.

  • The action actually started on Tuesday though when the PBC put on a card on Fox Sports 1.  In the main event of that card Breidis Prescott took on Levan Ghvamichava.  Both men were big punchers but Ghvamichava proved to be the better puncher on Tuesday night when he stopped Prescott in the seventh round.
