Weekend Wrap-Up

  • There weren't many fights last week but the fights that did take place certainly provided fans with plenty of action.  The most notable fight of last week was the light heavyweight bout on NBC between Andrzej Fonfara and Joe Smith Jr., a massive underdog.  Most people expected Fonfara, who looks better each time he steps in the ring, to easily handle the untested Smith.  Instead Smith proved that a puncher's chance is all you need and he brutally floored Fonfara in the opening round.  Later in that round Smith dropped a badly hurt Fonfara again, ending the fight.  Not only was the win the biggest of Smith's career but it was a huge upset that alter the career's of both men.

  • Also on that NBC card was a title rematch between Juan Carlos Payano and Rau'shee Warren.  Their first fight, which took place in August of 2015 was close for all 12 rounds and ended in a disputed split decision in Payano's favor.  That first fight could have easily gone either way and the rematch was much of the same.  Neither pugilist was ever able to completely control the fight and as the bell rang to end the final round it seemed like fans were in for another close, disputed decision.  The three official judges had the fight for Warren by the way of majority decision with one judge scoring the fight a draw.  The opening bout of that card featured 20-year-old southpaw prospect Erickson Lubin.  Lubin looks like a future star and he showed why again on Saturday night, stopping his opponent Daniel Sandoval in the third round.

  • The only other action last week took place on beIN Sports Espanol on Saturday night.  That Spanish-language card was headlined by a bout between Carlos Ocampo and Ramses Agaton.  Ocampo, a heavy handed prospect who is 27-years-old easily handled Agaton, winning the fight with a unanimous decision.  The co-feature of that card was a fight between the exciting Jose Uzcategui and the well past his prime Derrick Findley.  Findley would be better served hanging up his gloves rather than fight dangerous and much younger opponents and that was clear on Saturday night.  Uzcategui started fast and never slowed down and won the fight when Findley retired on his stool following the third round.
