Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Boxing was back on free TV in prime time last week on CBS.  That PBC card was headlined by a welterweight title fight between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.  The fight started fast and never let up.  Porter did what he does, smother his opponents punches and his own as he sticks his shoulder in the chest of his opponent and drives them back.  As for Thurman he chose to swing for the fences and on a few occasions had Porter hurt.  While Porter seemed to control the distance of the fight for many rounds it was Thurman who was landing the cleaner, harder punches in what was a very close fight.  When all was said and done the fight was a candidate for 2016 Fight of the Year and all three official judges scored the fight the same and all in favor of Thurman.

  • Also on that PBC on CBS card was a bout between Jarrett Hurd and Oscar Molina.  Hurd was the much bigger man and he controlled the fight from the start, dropping Molina in the opening round.  Molina never stopped fighting back but he took a tremendous amount of punishment during the fight until the referee had finally seen enough, stopping the fight in the final round, keeping Hurd an undefeated fighter.

  • Another big name in action last Saturday was heavyweight Anthony Joshua.  Joshua took on American Dominic Breazeale in the first defense of the title he took from Charles Martin.  Well, much like Martin, Breazeale really stood no chance.  Breazeale is an awkward fighter who came to the sport late and he was rocked by Joshua early in the fight.  However, much like he has done in the past Breazeale showed he does have heart and he fought on until being dropped twice and stopped in the seventh round.  Also on that card but not televised in the U.S. was a bout between George Groves and Martin Murray which Groves won widely by the way of unanimous decision.

  • Mike Alvarado, famous for this trilogy against Brandon Rios also found himself back in action last week on UniMas.  Despite taking on the unknown Josh Torres, who in his prime Alvarado would have beaten easily, things did not come so easy for Alvarado.  The fight, which was scheduled for eight rounds, was very close throughout.  When the scores were read Alvarado was the winner but only by a majority decision.  It was certainly not the performance Alvarado had hoped for and another example of why he may want to hang up the gloves.

  • Last week's action started on Friday on Telemundo.  That card was headlined by a bout between Ricardo Rodriguez and David Quijano.  While not the highest profile of fights it did appear to be a competitive fight on paper.  Yet when the fight went down it was Rodriguez who controlled the action on his way to a unanimous decision victory.
