Weekend Wrap-Up

For those of you who regularly read my blog let me apologize for missing last week's fights.  I currently do not have a working computer so I am constantly having to find other computers to use until I get my own.  This means, like was the case last week, that I may occasionally miss posting fight previews or quick picks, or even the Weekend Wrap-Up.  Please note that this edition of the Weekend Wrap-Up is covering fights on the Weekend of May 20th and 21st.

  • The biggest fight of the weekend took place on Showtime and featured the ultra talented, and at times ultra frustrating Erislandy Lara.  Lara took on Vanes Martirosyan in a rematch of their 2012 fight that was a total dud.  Luckily for fans this fight was better, although not much.  As usual Lara was able to control the pace but he seemed to be sitting down on his punches more which gave Martirosyan plenty of opportunities to unleash his own attack.  In fact, Martirosyan was able to consistently land strong left hooks to the body of Lara throughout the entire fight.  However, the left hook downstairs was about all Martirosyan could land and Lara was able to pepper him withj punches all night on his way to a close but clear unanimous decision victory.
  • Also on that Showtime card were both Charlo twins, Jermell and Jermall.  Jermall took on John Jackson and had a very tough time.  Jackson wasn't as aggressive as usual and was really putting together a beautiful performance.  Then in the eighth round Jackson was caught by a punch and turned away from Charlo.  When he turned Charlo unleashed another punch that sent Jackson into the ropes and down, ending the fight.  The punch kept Jermell Charlo undefeated and handed Jackson another tough loss.  Some may remember he was also beating Andy Lee convincingly before a Lee's right hook knocked him out.  As for Jermall Charlo, he took on the toughest test of his career in Austin Trout.  That fight was a very close one throughout and both men were able to put in good work.  When the fight ended both pugilists felt that they had won but the judges gave the fight to Charlo by the way of close unanimous decision.
  • The action didn't start on Saturday night though, Estrella TV aired a fight card on Friday.  That card was headlined by a bout between Eddie Gomez and John Karl Sosa.  That fight looked to be close on paper and in real life it turned out to be even closer.  Neither fighter was able to ever really take full control and throughout the entire fight it remained a close bout.  When the scores were announced it was Gomez who came away the winner with a razor close unanimous decision.  Also on that card was a fight between Fidel Maldonado Jr. and Art Hovhannisyan.  Maldonado was viewed as the favorite entering that fight but like in the main event neither prizefighter ever really established themselves over their opponent.  Maldonado was able to drop Hovhannisyan in the eighth round but then lost a point for a low blow the very next round.  In the end that point deduction would be crucial as the fight ended in a split draw.
