Showtime Quick Picks

Anthony Joshua vs. Dominic Breazeale: This Saturday from London, England the heavyweight title will be on the line.  That title fight, which will air on Showtime pits rising star Anthony Joshua (16-0, 16 KO) up against Dominic Breazeale (17-0, 15 KO) and Joshua's IBF title will be up for grabs.  Joshua is fresh off his destruction of Charles Martin who he knocked out in the second round and he looked marvelous in that fight.  Joshua is 6-feet 6-inches tall and fights out of the orthodox stance where he has shown tremendous power.  The U.K. product has a measuring stick jab that he uses to set up a strong straight right hand.  Along with that right hand Joshua also has a dangerous left hook and will land solid uppercuts at times.  It is the straight right hand of Joshua though that is his best punch and that is the punch that floored Martin twice in their fight.  Breazeale is even taller than Joshua at 6-feet 7-inches but he lacks the ripped physique of Joshua and usually comes in looking soft around the belly.  Breazeale likes to work behind his jab but he moves awkwardly in the ring.  The best punch from Breazeale is probably his right hand but he can also sneak in some good uppercuts and his left hook is solid as well.  However, in his last fight he was dropped by the much smaller Amir Mansour and the punch that did it was a right hand.  The right hand of Joshua is his best weapon and if Breazeale leaves himself open for it it will be a short night of action.  Even though Breazeale showed a lot of heart and resilience against Mansour, that isn't the type of opponent he should have such a difficult time with if he wants to compete with the likes of Joshua.  This fight will be all Joshua and he will win it with a knockout in the fifth round.

George Groves vs. Martin Murray: The co-feature for Showtime's fight this Saturday will be a 12-round bout that will be a WBA super middleweight title eliminator.  That fight will be between George Groves (23-3, 18 KO) and Martin Murray (33-3-1, 16 KO) who always seem to play the role of runner-up in big fights.  Groves has to be best remembered for being knocked out by Carl Froch in front of 80,000 people while Martin is best known for pushing Sergio Martinez into a tough fight in Argentina.  Groves is an orthodox fighter with good power but he is also vulnerable to the knockdown and has been knocked out twice in his three career losses.  The jab and straight right hand of Groves are pretty good and that straight right hand can do some damage as can his left hook.  Groves also usually does a nice job of banging the body, something that could prove useful against the tough Murray.  Murray is also an orthodox fighter but he has a little less pop on his punches than Groves does.  The best weapon Murray has is probably his left hook to the body but he also has a strong straight right hand.  What should make this fight fun is that it is very even and both fighters have similar styles.  Both men like to mix things up and aren't the best defensively which should make for some good action.  The difference in this fight could be the youth of Groves who is five years younger than Murray and has taken less punishment because of that.  This will be a very close fight but one that Groves win by the way of majority decision.
