PBC on ESPN Quick Picks

Artur Beterbiev vs. Ezequiel Maderna: After what seems like a lifetime the PBC will finally be returning to ESPN this Saturday.  It almost seems a shame that ESPN gave up its always entertaining "Friday Night Fights" series in order to put on PBC cards because those cards are few and far between on the network.  However, this Saturday knockout artist Artur Beterbiev (9-0, 9 KO) will take on Ezequiel Maderna (23-2, 25 KO) in a 12-round fight in the light heavyweight division.  While Beterbiev may not be the best light heavyweight yet, he is certainly in the top 10 and arguably the top five.  His power is undeniable and for a fighter with only nine career fights he has already beaten the likes of Tavoris Cloud and Gabriel Campillo.  Beterbiev is an orthodox fighter with an almost unfair amount of pop on his punches.  However, he isn't just a brawler, he has some skills to go along with that pop.  The Russian fighter doesn't jab as much as he should but when he does let it go it lands stiffly.  Along with that jab  he has a very strong straight right hand but his best punch is probably his devastating left hook, although the right hand is really just as dangerous.  What makes his left hook so dangerous is that he can throw it very shortly.  One thing he does need to improve on though is not being over aggressive and giving himself up on defense.  As for Maderna, he has only fought outside of his native Argentina twice.  Both of those trips to the ring ended in defeat the first in Monaco to Edwin Rodriguez and the second in South Africa to Thomas Oosthuizen.  That doesn't bode well for Maderna considering he will be traveling to Canada for this fight and Beterbiev is a better fighter than both Rodriguez and Oosthuizen.  Maderna is an orthodox fighter who isn't a high volume puncher.  Also, far too often Maderna doesn't commit to his punches which means they don't land with much power.  His best, and most often used punch, is probably his straight right hand but he leads with it and would be better served bringing it behind a crisp jab.  Maderna also has a quick left hook but again it doesn't land with much authority.  Defensively Maderna is solid but he has been down before and against Beterbiev would probably find himself down again.  This fight should be all Beterbiev and he will get the win by the way of third round knockout.

Bryant Perrella vs. David Grayton: The co-feature for Saturday's PBC on ESPN card will be a fight between two undefeated pugilists under 30 years old.  Those fighters are Bryant Perrella (13-0, 12 KO) and David Grayton (14-0, 10 KO) are they are scheduled to go 10 rounds in the always talented welterweight division.  You shouldn't be fooled by their records though, neither fighter has faced anyone of note and both of their resumes are filled with fighters who are pedestrian at best.  Perrella is a 6-foot tall southpaw who has show some serious power.  Perrella uses his height well and he also always keeps his left hand planted on his chin for protection.  He likes to fight behind a stiff jab and will often stick that jab to the belly of his opponents.  With that jab comes his best punch, the straight left hand and while his right hook has power it often comes in a bit too wide.  As for Grayton there is little to no tape of him online fighting as a professional.  When you look at his resume it is even worse than Perrella's as far as the opposition he's faced, and that's not a good sign.  Grayton is also a southpaw and he has faster hands than Perrella does and while he has pretty good power he isn't as big of a puncher as Perrella.  Grayton does have a sharp right hook and accurate straight left hand.  If either of these fighters hopes to be a high level prospect they need to show it tonight.  It should be a decent fight and Perrella will be the one who comes away the winner with a majority decision.
