Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The big fight of last week was the HBO pay-per-view main event between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Amir Khan.  While many felt that Khan would be steamrolled he actually gave a good account of himself early.  The speed and movement of Khan was giving Alvarez a few problems early in the fight, but as many predicted the power of Alvarez would soon be too much for Khan.  In the sixth round Alvarez feinted the jab and when Khan bit on the fake Alvarez unloaded a right hand that sent Khan flailing to the canvas and the fight would end.  Khan needs to be given props for taking this fight in the first place but in the end Alvarez was too strong and recorded a knockout that will certainly be in the discussion for 2016 Knockout of the Year.

  • The undercard of Saturday's HBO pay-per-view card was also exciting.  The co-feature of that card was a fight between slugger David Lemieux and reclamation project Glen Tapia.  Both fighters were coming off losses, Lemieux to Gennady Golovkin and Tapia to Michel Soro.  The stoppage loss suffered by Tapia was a bad one which made it odd that his promoter would throw him in with Lemieux.  Except his promoter is Golden Boy Promotions, who also promote Lemieux and were probably just using Tapia as a sacrificial goat since he still had some name recognition.  Tapia showed some heart early but in the fourth round he was stopped by Lemieux and should really reevaluate things before returning to the ring.  Also on that undercard was a fight between Frankie Gomez and Mauricio Herrera.  This was the biggest test of Gomez's career and he look phenomenal, scoring the unanimous decision win and winning every round on all three judges scorecards.  The first fight on that card was between the undefeated prospect Patrick Teixeira and veteran Curtis Stevens.  Teixeira who has his share of doubters was stopped in the second round of the fight, ruining his undefeated record and giving Stevens' career new life.

  • Last week's action wasn't all about HBO though.  The action started on Friday night on Estrella TV.  The headliners of that card were Marvin Quintero and Petr Petrov.  Petrov proved to be too sharp for Quintero and he was able to force him to quit on his stool following the sixth round.  Also on that card was a bout between Pablo Cesar Cano and Alan Sanchez.  The fight remained close for all 10 rounds but in the end Sanchez was awarded the split decision victory, a big win for him and a very tough loss for Cano.

WEEKLY RECORD: 4-2
