Estrella TV Quick Picks

Marvin Quintero vs. Petr Petrov: Tonight, as an appetizer for boxing fans looking forward to Saturday's pay-per-view card, Estrella TV has some good fights in store.  The main event of that card will be a battle between the heavy hitting but vulnerable Marvin Quintero (28-6, 24 KO) and skilled boxer Petr Petrov (36-4-2, 17 KO).  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the lightweight division with both men looking to continue recent winning streaks.  Quintero is a southpaw with a very heavy straight left hand.  At times Quintero will throw the left hand over the top and when he does that it also lands with a good amount of power.  The southpaw also has a pretty good right hook, although it will come in wide sometimes and as for his jab he only really uses it as a range finder.  While Quintero certainly has power he is also vulnerable to power punches himself.  In his six career losses five of them have come by the way of knockout and while Petrov's record doesn't show it he does have some pop.  Also, at times Quintero will pull straight back on defense which is always a recipe for being knocked out.  Petrov is a different type of fighter than Quintero, and not just because he is an orthodox boxer.  Petrov loves to work his jab and he has a very good one that he will often follow up with an accurate straight right hand.  When Petrov gets on the inside he will let loose with some left hooks but they aren't a often used weapon for him.  However, at times he really puts a lot behind his jab and it lands almost as if it was a straight left hand.  Defensively Petrov is solid and the only fighter to knock him out was Marcos Maidana back in 2011.  Whoever can impose their style will win this fight.  Quintero is a banger and Petrov is a boxer and most of the time in those type of fights the boxer wins.  That will be the case tonight when Petrov comes away with the majority decision win.

Pablo Cesar Cano vs. Alan Sanchez: The co-feature on tonight's Estrella TV card will be a bout between Pablo Cesar Cano (29-4-1, 21 KO) and Alan Sanchez (17-3-1, 9 KO).  That fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the welterweight division.  Both fighters seem to be at different places in their careers.  In his last eight fights Cano has gone 4-3 with one no contest and Sanchez has gone 7-1 and is riding a five fight win streak in which he has scored three knockouts.  However, Cano has been facing better opponents and he has the edge in experience over Sanchez.  Cano is an orthodox fighter with pretty good power and he has been in the ring with some top fighters including, Shane Mosley, Paulie Malignaggi, and Erik Morales.  Cano doesn't jab much and he typically walks straight in behind left hooks and overhand rights.  On the inside those punches can be good weapons but if he throws them from too far away he leaves himself open to be countered.  Cano's best weapon is probably his body work, especially on the inside with his left hook.  The big advantage for Sanchez in this fight is size.  He is 4-inches taller than Cano and his reach advantage is 6-inches.  He will need to use that size to keep Cano outside on the end of his punches because he doesn't have much enough power to trade with Cano at close range.  Sanchez, who fights out of the orthodox stance, likes to pop his jab from the outside and when he feels comfortable he will follow that up with a nice straight right hand.  This fight is like the main event in that one fighter will be looking to get inside and land power while the other will try to stay on the outside and box.  Cano is going to have a difficult time getting inside on Sanchez unless he can work his jab and because he has fought at a higher level he should be able to figure out how to do that.  It won't be easy but Cano will win this fight by the way of split decision.
