Weekend Wrap-Up

  • On Saturday night Manny Pacquiao entered the squared circle for the last time, at least according to him.  While most speculate the Filipino legend will return to fight on as of now he is a retired man.  Pacquiao faced off for the third time against Timothy Bradley and like their previous fights he won, although officially he is 2-1 against Bradley.  While Bradley gave a pretty good account of himself and kept it close, he was dropped twice by Pacquiao in rounds seven and nine which gave Pacquiao an even bigger lead on the cards.  If Pacquiao does return his trainer Freddie Roach said he would like him to fight Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and then have a rematch with Floyd Mayweather.  As for Bradley he should have no problem securing another high level fight.

  • The rest of the Pacquiao-Bradley undercard was dubbed the "No Trump" card.  Apparently promoter Bob Arum's response to Donald Trump promising to build a wall along the U.S.A's southern border.  The undercard was headlined by a bout between Gilberto Ramirez and Arthur Abraham.  Abraham, the title holder, was Ramirez's first big test and he passed with flying colors, winning every round and all three judges scorecards and taking Abraham's belt in the process.  Also on that card was a bout between Oscar Valdez, who looks like a future star, and Evgeny Gradovich.  Valdez looked very good, dispatching Gradovich with a fourth round stoppage.  The card opened with Jose Ramirez taking on Manny Perez.  Perez wasn't looked at as much of a threat but he always shows a lot of heart and has a good chin.  He put those attributes to use and went the distance with Ramirez, although he lost by unanimous decision.

  • Also on Saturday was a card from England where Charles Martin traveled to with his heavyweight title belt in order to faced undefeated prospect Anthony Joshua.  While many believe Joshua will be the next heavyweight star he was buzzed in his last fight which caused some to think Martin could beat him.  Instead Joshua massacred Martin, dropping him twice in the second round.  After the second knockdown Martin got a knee and started to get up just as the referee was saying "ten."  Clearly he wanted no more and now Joshua is the IBF World heavyweight champion.
