Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The biggest name in action last week was Adrien Broner.  Broner, who is increasingly ticking off boxing fans with his outside the ring antics was back at it again.  Broner was allegedly involved in an assault and was wanted by police in Ohio, all of which hit the news in the week leading up to his fight with Ashley Theophane on Spike.  Things in the ring did go better for Broner as he hurt Theophane numerous times before stopping him in the ninth round.  Although the stoppage was questionable the outcome seemed inevitable.  The problem for Broner is that Theophane is far from elite and should have been someone Broner dismantled much quicker.  Following his victory Broner did what many fans thought he might, call out his former mentor Floyd Mayweather.  While Broner appeared serious Mayweather could be seen ringside laughing.  If Broner did fight Mayweather and lost it would continue a troubling recent trend for the fighter where he beats an average opponent or two only to lose when he steps in against some real talent.

  • The co-feature for Friday's Spike card was a bout between Robert Easter Jr. and Argenis Mendez.  Easter, an untested prospect looked good against Mendez who was probably the best opponent he has faced to date.  The younger fighter was able to use his height well early on and started to land his power in the middle rounds.  In the fifth round with Mendez on the ropes Easter threw two show me jabs that set up a perfect right hand that ended the night for Mendez.  Easter still hasn't faced any elite opposition and probably won't for some time but on Friday night he showed that he has the goods.

  • Also on Friday night was another edition of Golden Boy Promotions' LA Fight Club.  That card, which aired on Estrella TV, was headlined by a bout between undefeated prospect Manuel Avila and Rene Alvarado.  The fight was supposed to be a tough test for the young Avila but it was anything but.  It was clear early on that Avila's superior boxing skills would frustrate Alvarado and Avila was able to cruise to a unanimous decision victory.

  • Saturday night was seriously void of any real action.  The only fight in play was one between Francisco Santana and Ed Paredes on UniMas that no one really seemed to care about.  Neither man could afford another loss as both had a handful of blemishes on their record already but from the opening round it was clear who would win, Santana.  Not only did Santana control all of the action but when the scores were announced all three judges scored every single round in his favor.
