UniMas Quick Pick

Francisco Santana vs. Ed Paredes: Saturday's only televised fight will be on UniMas and while it may not be the big fight fans are used to seeing on a Saturday night, some boxing is better than no boxing.  The main event of that card will be a 10-round bout in the crowded welterweight division between Francisco Santana (23-4-1, 12 KO) and Ed Paredes (36-5-1, 24 KO).  While both fighters have a handful of losses those blemishes came at different times in their careers.  Outside of his 2015 loss to Sadam Ali all of Santana's losses happened before 2012.  Those include a decision loss to Jermell Charlo and two losses to Karim Mayfield.  Paredes also has some early losses but they have continued.  In his last three fights Paredes has a record of 1-2.  As for fighting styles, Santana does his work out of the orthodox stance where he flashes a decent jab.  Along with that jab Santana has a pretty good straight right hand but his money punch is his left hook.  While he doesn't have top end power Santana is very accurate with his left hook and often finds the chin of opponents while also putting in some good body work.  Defensively Santana isn't elite but in his four losses he was only stopped once back in 2009.  Paredes also isn't the best defensively but he too has been resilient, only being stopped once in his five losses the last time coming in 2007.  Paredes is also an orthodox fighter and he has a pretty nice jab he likes to work from the outside.  What Paredes doesn't have though is an accurate straight right hand to follow that jab up.  On the inside Paredes does a nice job of attacking the body and roughing things up and like Santana he too has a nice left hook.  This fight will probably come down to current form since both fighters are pretty similar in their style and ability.  Santana is currently in better form, while both fighters have recent losses Santana's came against Sadam Ali while Paredes lost to the faded Alfonso Gomez and Alan Sanchez who is still just a prospect.  This won't be the prettiest fight but it will come to an end when Santana stops Paredes in the eighth round.
