ShoBox: The New Generation Quick Pick

Nikolay Potapov vs. Stephon Young: Usually Showtime's program ShoBox: The New Generation features young prospects on the rise.  Most often fans have heard of these fighters, but on Friday's edition of ShoBox: The New Generation the headliners aren't fighters you might name as a top prospect, or one you're even very familiar with.  The two headliners in this case or Nikolay Potapov (14-0, 6 KO) and Stephon Young (14-0-2, 6 KO) who are scheduled to go 10 rounds in the bantamweight division.  Neither fight has anyone worth noting on their resumes and in the case of Potapov, a Russian, this will only be his second fight outside of his homeland.  Potapov is an orthodox fighter without any notable power.  The Russian moves well in the ring and has shown a good jab in his young career.  With that jab Potapov also has a good looking left hook but he doesn't use his right hand all that often.  While Potapov does move pretty well he also has a habit of relying on his reflexes and pulling his head straight back defensively which could get him in trouble as he steps in with better opposition.  As for Young, he is a southpaw and he too lacks any serious power.  Young likes to play the role of counter puncher and at times he seems to have a nervous energy in the ring.  He doesn't jab much because he isn't usually leading the action.  Instead young likes to catch opponents with check right hooks and straight left hands.  While neither fighter has lost as a pro Young does have two draws and one came against a 3-4-3 foe.  This fight probably won't be the most exciting one of the weekend as both men are boxers and not punchers but it should be a fairly even fight.  Potapov seems to be a little more polished and that will help him secure the unanimous decision victory.
