PBC on NBC Quick Picks

Errol Spence Jr. vs. Chris Algieri: This Satruday the PBC returns to NBC for a card headlined by rising contender Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KO) as he takes on Chris Algieri (21-2, 8 KO).  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the welterweight division and for Spence it will be a step up fight against the toughest opponent of his career.  Spence is a southpaw who has slick boxing skills but also plenty of pop on his punches.  The 26-year-old Spence has a very good jab and an accurate and stiff straight left hand that can snap opponents heads back.  Along with his plus power Spence has very good hand speed with it he will land a solid right hook.  While Spence has yet to be tested by an elite fighter or serious power puncher so far in his career he has shown good defensive skills and against Algieri he shouldn't have to worry about many power punches coming his way.  Algieri is an orthodox fighter who is a good boxer without much power.  He recently started training under John David Jackson and has shown improvement under his tutelage.  Algieri is probably best known for surviving early knockdowns to Ruslan Provodnikov to box his way to a victory.  However, he didn't do so well in his next fight against Manny Pacquiao who dropped him multiple times en route to a wide decision win.  After that fiasco Algieri started working with Jackson and looked solid against Amir Khan.  Algieri is an orthodox fighter with a skillful jab he can use to tame opponents.  With that jab Algieri also has a decent left hook but the problem with all of his punches is that they don't land with much authority.  Under Jackson, Algieri has been sitting down on his punches more often but he is still more of a stick and move fighter.  One thing Algieri has going for him is his heart.  He has been dropped many times in his career but has never been knocked out.  If Spence were able to stop him it would be very impressive because it would make him the first man to do so and it would also give him a win over his best opponent to date.  While Spence won't score the knockout in this fight he will be the sharper fighter and beat Algieri by the way of unanimous decision.

Krzysztof Glowacki vs. Steve Cunningham: The co-feature for Saturday's PBC card will be a title fight between Krzysztof Glowacki (25-0, 16 KO) and Steve Cunningham (28-7-1, 13 KO).  On the line will be Glowacki's WBO cruiserweight title, which he won in his last fight, a huge upset over then champion Marco Huck.  Glowacki was nearly stopped in the sixth round of that fight only to come back and stop Huck in the 11th round.  As for Cunningham, he will be moving back down from the heavyweight division where he has been campaigning since 2012.  Cunningham fought bravely as a heavyweight but was always the smaller man and always the lighter puncher.  Glowacki, who fights out of the southpaw stance isn't a huge puncher either but he has the heavier hands between the two.  The Polish fighter has a strong jab and an even stronger straight left hand.  While Glowacki doesn't throw his right hook much he can do damage with it but he doesn't have the fastest hands and he isn't top notch defensively.  Cunningham has definitely faced better opponents than Glowacki.  He also holds a win over Marco Huck and has been in the ring with Tomasz Adamek and Tyson Fury, among other.  Cunningham is an orthodox fighter with very good stamina, although he didn't look great in that department in his last fight against Antonio Tarver.  Cunningham has a good jab and he will need to use that punch often against Glowacki, especially since he has a big reach advantage,  Along with the jab Cunningham also has a sneaky good right hand but he is also vulnerable to power punches and has been dropped more than a few times in his career.  Current form could be the key in this fight, while Glowacki is undefeated as a pro Cunningham is 4-5-1 in his last 10 fights.  This should be a pretty close fight throughout but Cunningham will find most of his success early.  Glowacki is 10 years younger than Cunningham and has been in less brutal fights.  Glowacki won't steamroll Cunningham but he will beat him by the way of majority decision.
