Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Only two fights were covered on Big Time Boxing last week but before the recap of those a few things need to be mentioned.  The first is that Roy Jones Jr. continues to tarnish his legacy, this time he decided he would fight a fan.  There were some regulations, the fan had to have at least some fighting experience.  Jones took on Vyron Phillips who had limited experience as a amateur boxer and professional MMA fighter and the fight was an internet only pay-per-view card that didn't amount to much more than a sideshow.  Jones won the fight by knockout but at this point no one cares.  He has a good job as an expert analyst for fights on HBO and seemingly doesn't need the money so it is finally time for Jones to hang the gloves up.  Actually that time was really a few years ago but better let than never.

  • Another fighter who wont last week via knockout but should consider retiring is Mike Alvarado.  Alvarado is best known for the two wars and one complete dud he had with Brandon Rios and those first two fights will be remembered for a long time.  On Saturday on UniMas on a card where he was the co-feature Alvarado knocked out Saul Corral but looked sluggish and shopworn.  He may not be in Roy Jones Jr. territory yet but he is getting close and should retire before he ends up getting seriously hurt, which could very well happen if he faces top fighters again.

  • Now to the fights that Big Time Boxing did cover, the highest profile of them being the main event on Saturday's UniMas card.  The main event of that card was a bout between Juan Diaz, returning from injury, and Fernando Garcia.  After coming back from retirement and winning five fights Diaz was injured and missed all of 2015.  This was his first fight of 2016 and while he ate his fair share of clean punches he looked good, scoring the ninth round stoppage.  Up to that point it appeared that Diaz had won every round and he really let his hands go and threw a lot of short combinations.  Diaz may not be ready for a title shot just yet but the lightweight division is wide open so he could make some noise later in the year.

  • Last week's action actually started on Tuesday night with a PBC card on Fox Sports 1.  That card was headlined by the power punching Sergey Lipinets as he took on Levan Ghvamichava in a 10-round bout.  The fight was close until the fifth round when Lipinets caught Ghvamichava with an overhand right followed by a left hook to the body.  It appeared that it was the left hook that did the most damage and Ghvamichava was unable to beat the count, keeping Lipinets record a perfect one.
