Weekend Wrap-Up

  • It is never a good sign when the week's biggest boxing news happens outside of the ropes but that was the case last week.  Not only was the much anticipated fight between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter postponed after Thurman suffered injuries in a car accident but other notable names were pulled out of action as well.  David Lemieux came in overweight for his return bout against James De La Rosa and the fight was scrapped and Zab Judah's fight was also canceled after it came to light that he had falsified some records.

  • The big winner of last week was Terry Flanagan who bested Derry Matthews in their rematch by the way of unanimous decision on beIN Sports.  Matthews had his moments but Flanagan controlled most of the fight and his win keeps his perfect record intact.  The win, which allowed Flanagan to keep his WBO World lightweight title could also give him the opportunity to face some bigger names pretty soon.

  • On beIN Sports Espanol another title fight took place when Miguel Berchelt faced off against George Jupp for an interim WBO World super featherweight title.  Berchelt was the favorite to win the fight and he did exactly that, dropping Jupp three times and stopping him in the sixth round.  Also on that card was a bout between Junior Granados and Aston Palicte.  That fight was close throughout but when the scores were read it was Granados who came away with the split decision victory.

  • The other fight on Saturday night took place on UniMas when Casey Ramos faced off with Jonathan Perez.  Ramos, who is undefeated, remained that way after Perez retired following the eighth round.  At the time Ramos had won all eight round and all three judges scorecards.

  • Saturday may have been a busy night but last week's action started on Telemundo on Friday when Carlos Ruiz took on Joel Montes de Oca.  The fight was never in question as Ruiz not only dropped Montes de Oca in the sixth round but also won every single round on two of the judges cards while only losing one round on the third judges card.
