Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The biggest fight of last week was the PBC on Fox main event between Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero.  Garcia was looking to remain undefeated as he continues his climb in the welterweight division while Guerrero was looking to stay relevant among the top fighters in that division.  Like a typical Garcia fight it was a tale of two halves.  The first half of the fight did not go Garcia's way as Guerrero was able to play the role of aggressor and dictate the pace.  In the second half of the fight though Garcia was able to turn things around an boxed very nicely backing up.  While the fight was close it was clear that Garcia was doing more damage with his counter punching and beautiful straight right hand, a punch that looked better than ever for him.  When the scores were announced Garcia got the close unanimous decision win.  It was a nice performance from Garcia and a gutsy one from Guerrero who may not be as close to the end as some had previously thought.

  • The co-feature of Saturday's PBC on Fox card pitted rising prospect Sammy Vasquez up against tough veteran Aaron Martinez.  What was expected to be a close fight was anything but as Vasquez took control early and never let up.  While other prospects may receive more attention than Vasquez he certainly can't be overlooked and is very TV friendly.  Vasquez ended up winning the fight via sixth round stoppage when Martinez failed to answer the bell for round seven.  The opening bout of that card also ended with a fighter staying on his stool.  That fighter was the 43-year-old Amir Mansour.  Mansour was taking on the undefeated heavyweight prospect Dominic Breazeale who despite his record many fans don't consider to be a threat to anyone in the division.  Mansour came out fast and dropped Breazeale in the third round.  Although he looked to be on the verge of being stopped Breazeale survived the round.  After that attack Mansour tired and slowed his pace while still picking spots to wing wild knockout punches.  To his credit Breazeale stayed composed and caught Mansour with a punch that apparently injured the veterans jaw badly enough that he stayed on his stool following the fifth round, giving Breazeale the stoppage win.  It was said that Mansour bit through his tongue which then swelled up causing breathing problems and he may have also suffered a broken jaw.
  • Also on Saturday night was a fight on beIN Sports Espanol.  That card was headlined by Jose Zepeda who was looking to get back on track after an injury resulted in a loss and then he fought to a no contest in his next bout.  Zepeda wasted no time and stopped his opponent, Ammeth Diaz, in the very first round.  Also on that card was a fight between Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr. and Jhon Gemino.  While the fight was close the boxing skills of Sanchez let him escape with a close unanimous decision victory.
  • On Friday night Showtime once again aired a ShoBox: The New Generation card full of prospects.  One of those prospect was Rob Brant who was looking to stay undefeated and look good after his last fight ended very close on the cards.  Brant didn't just look good, he looked great.  Brant took on Decarlo Perez and was in control entering the fourth round.  With Perez backing up Brant flashed a jab and brought a stiff straight right hand behind it that caught Perez flush and nearly sent him out of the ring.  Perez then bounced off the ropes and onto the canvas and when the ref got to him he waived off the count immediately, giving Brant a win and putting him in contention for the 2016 Knockout of the Year.  Also on that card was plus sized heavyweight Jarrell Miller who entered the ring wearing some of the shortest, and most cringe worthy pair or trunks boxing fans have seen in some time.  The heavy handed Miller took on Donovan Dennis and dropped him twice in the opening frame.  Dennis was able to make it to the seventh round, in part because Miller faded during the fight.  However, Miller had enough in the tank in that seventh round to hurt and stop Dennis keeping him an undefeated fighter who has the personality to become a star.
  • Last week's action started on Tuesday night when Jamal James took on Javier Molina in a 10-round fight in the welterweight division.  The fight was never really in question as James used his boxing skills to take control early and never let up.  While Molina made it to the final bell it was clear that he had lost the fight and the judges saw it the same way, giving James the unanimous decision victory.
