Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The biggest fight of the past week was without a doubt the WBC heavyweight title fight between champion Deontay Wilder and challenger Artur Szpilka that aired on Showtime.  While most fans expected Wilder to dominate the action Szpilka ended up giving a very good account of himself.  The fighters spent the first few rounds feeling each other out and Szpilka had Wilder looking uncomfortable and unable to find success with his jab.  However, in the middle rounds Wilder started to land his powerful right hand and although he didn't pull away from Szpilka it did look like he was starting to figure him out.  In the ninth round Wilder caught Szpilka coming in wildly and knocked him out cold with a beautiful right hand that landed flush on the chin.  The punch let Wilder walk away with his belt and left Szpilka sprawled out on the canvas.  After a few scary moments Szpilka came to and was able to sit up but was taken out of the ring on a stretcher just to be safe.  Wilder may not have looked great for the first eight rounds but he made for that with one perfect punch.  After the fight Tyson Fury entered the ring and he and Wilder got into a back and forth and the exchange certainly had fans riled up and ready for a match between the two.

  •  The co-feature on Saturday's card was also a heavyweight title fight, the first one in Brooklyn since 1900 and that fight was for the vacant IBF title.  Gunning for that title were the undefeated American heavyweight Charles Martin and the fellow undefeated Vyacheslav "Czar" Glazkov.  The fight was expected to be a close one but it never really got going.  In the third round, without being touched by a punch, Glazkov dropped.  At first it didn't look like a big deal which left fans puzzled when Glazkov couldn't continue and the fight was waived off.  However, during a replay fans could see that Glazkov suffered a gruesome knee injury and early reports are that he may have torn his ACL.  While Martin was awarded the title fans will have to wait to find out just how good the heavyweight actually is.

  • Earlier in the week the PBC returned to Fox Sports 1 and the main event of that card pitted Miguel Flores up against Mario Briones.  While the fight was a one-sided one in Flores' favor that didn't mean it was action packed.  Flores won the fight by the way of wide unanimous decision, shutting Briones out on two of the official judges scorecards.  Briones gave a good account of himself thought and caught Flores flush more than a few times making for a fun night of boxing.
