ShoBox: The New Generation Quick Picks

Brant will look to remain perfect
Rob Brant vs. Decarlo Perez: On Friday night Showtime will air another edition of its prospect heavy cards ShoBox: The New Generation.  The series has featured many young undefeated fighters who have gone on to do big things and Rob Brant (18-0, 11 KO) is hoping to add his name to that list.  Brant will be taking on Decarlo Perez (15-3-1, 5 KO) in a 10-round fight from the action packed middleweight division.  Brant is an athletic orthodox fighter who throws a stiff jab.  Along with that jab Brant has also shown a nice straight right hand and the ability to turn his left hook over nicely.  While Brant has a pretty nice idea of what he wants to do in the ring sometimes he punches can come in too wide.  The knock against the 25-year-old Brant is that he has never faced a notable opponent.  His toughest test came in his last fight against Louis Rose and in that bout Brant was lucky to leave with a razor thin majority decision victory.  Perez hasn't faced many notable opponents himself and his record looks that much worse when two of the fighters who lost to now have career records of 3-5 and 6-4.  His other loss came against Wilky Campfort who is a name fight fans should recognize but still not a fighter it looks good losing to.  Perez is at his best when he can use his jab as a measuring stick to set up with right hand.  The problem for him is that even when the right hand lands flush he doesn't carry much power on any of his punches.  On the inside though Perez does do a very nice job of landing uppercuts with his right hand and he has quicker hands than Brant does, especially with his left hook.  If Brant wants to take that next step he not only needs to beat Perez but he has to do so convincingly.  While Brant will get the victory on Friday night he will have to settle for the majority decision win in a close fight.

Miller will look to stay unbeaten
Jarrell Miller vs. Donovan Dennis: The co-feature for Friday's ShoBox: The New Generation card will be a 10-round heavyweight bout between Jarrell Miller (15-0-1, 13 KO) and Donovan Dennis (12-2, 10 KO).  Most fans have probably never heard of Miller while Dennis is best known for losing the finals of ESPN's 2015 Boxcino Heavyweight Tournament to Andrey Fedosov.  Miller is an orthodox fighter who isn't in the best shape and who doesn't have the best boxing skills, probably because he actually started out as a kickboxer.  What Miller does have is plenty of power.  When Miller lets his hands go they always have bad intentions, especially his left hook.  With that left hook when Miller gets in close he lets go with a very strong right uppercut that usually snaps opponents heads back.  Miller is a very aggressive fighter and doesn't pay much attention to defense.  In fact his idea of defense is planting his feet and putting the earmuffs on until it is his turn to punch again.  Across the ring from Miller will be Dennis who is the better boxer of the two.  Dennis is a southpaw who is always in good shape and has a quick snapping jab.  With that jab Dennis also flashes a good straight left hand and when he throws that punch over the top he can land it with some power.  The problem for Dennis has been his chin.  Both of his career losses have come by the way of knockout and both were of the one punch variety.  Dennis may find himself ahead on the cards due to his better boxing ability only to get stopped late.  How deep this fight goes will be interesting because it is the first time either fighter has been scheduled to go 10 rounds and Miller has never gone passed six while Dennis has never been deeper than eight.  Because Miller is such a big puncher and Dennis isn't the best at eating power punches Miller will come away victorious with the sixth round knockout.
