PBC on FS1 Quick Pick

Miguel Flores vs. Mario Briones: There hasn't been much action so far in 2016 but that will start to change this Tuesday on Fox Sports 1.  The PBC returns to the network with a main event fight between 23-year-old prospect Miguel Flores (18-0, 9 KO) and Mario Briones (27-4-2, 20 KO).  The fight is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the featherweight division, one of the deepest in boxing.  Flores is coming off an impressive performance against the power punching veteran Alfred Tetteh who he knocked out in the second round of their 2015 fight.  The young prospect had a busy 2015 going 4-0 with two knockouts while Briones only fought once in 2015, getting a win over a 2-3 fighter.  Flores is an orthodox fighter and is tall for his division at 5-feet 8-inches.  He has shown a good jab early in his career and his long arms allow him to touch opponents from the outside.  Flores also does a nice job of banging his left hook to the body and he is becoming a very good body puncher which is positive for such a young pugilist.  Another thing the young Flores does well is cut off the ring which allows him to get inside and kill the body.  Briones is also an orthodox fighter and he has good power for the lower weight classes.  The veteran has shown a solid left hook in his career and while he has some power in his right hand most of his punches come in wildly.  That is the major problem for Briones, he likes to attack but he often throws wild combinations without worrying about return fire.  While Flores can box from the outside and bang on the inside, Briones is more of a one-trick pony and that trick is trading punches from the pocket.  Clearly Flores will be the better boxer in this bout and he could decide to control the fight from the outside with his jab and move in and attack the body and then move out before Briones returns fire.  Briones has only been knocked out once in his four career losses but even though Flores' knockout numbers don't jump off the page he is a very good body puncher and can end a fight with one left hook downstairs.  That knockout won't come on Tuesday though as Flores will have to settle for the wide unanimous decision win.
