Weekend Wrap-Up

  • There were a ton of fights this weekend so lets make it simple and start from the beginning, with the PBC card on Fox Sports 1.  That card was headlined by the undefeated prospect Juan Dominguez and he squared off against Yenifel Vicente.  Vicente was supposed to be a tough test for Dominguez but a test he could pass.  Instead Dominguez got caught with a massive overhand right from Vicente at the start of the 3rd round and got knocked out cold.  Another undefeated prospect appeared on that card and he had much more success than Dominguez did.  That prospect was cruiserweight Keith Tapia who took on tough journeyman Garrett Wilson.  The older Wilson was no match for Tapia who beat him easily on the cards by the way of unanimous decision in a fight that was never close.

  • The week's action picked up again on Friday when truTV aired a card headlined by Felix Verdejo, a fighter who looks like he will be Puerto Rico's next superstar.  Verdejo was making his return from surgery on his left hand and he looked spectacular.  The Puerto Rican was taking on Josenilson Dos Santos but the fight ended quickly after it began.  In the 2nd round Verdejo caught Dos Santos with a brutal overhand right and while Dos Santos was able to beat the count, once he got to his feet he stumbled around the ring and it was clear he could not continue.  That gave Verdejo the stoppage victory and kept his perfect record intact.  However, the co-feature for Friday's card really stole the show.  That fight pitted former Fighter of the Year Nonito Donaire up against the relatively unknown Cesar Juarez.  Early on it was all Donaire whose accuracy and power seemed to be too much for the slower Juarez.  In the 4th round Juarez got dropped twice and it appeared as if the fight wouldn't last another round.  The tables turned in the middle rounds though and Juarez was able to walk Donaire down and start landing some heavy leather of his own.  Juarez had said that he wanted to take Donaire into deep water and test his mettle and he did just that.  When the scores were announced Donaire was given the unanimous decision win, but that didn't matter much because both fighters came out winners in this Fight of the Year candidate.

  • Showtime also aired a fight card on Friday and it was another of their prospect heavy ShoBox: The New Generation cards.  The headliner was unbeaten Regis Prograis and he took on fellow unbeaten Abel Ramos.  While Porgrais didn't start out looking as electric as he usually does he still controlled all of the action.  As the rounds wore on it became clearer that Ramos was in trouble and Prograis remained in control until he finished the job with an 8th round stoppage, keeping his record a perfect one.

  • Things got really busy on Saturday and the fights started off in prime time on NBC.  That PBC card featured a main event between fan favorite Omar Figueroa and veteran Antonio DeMarco.  The fight took place at junior middleweight, an unfamiliar weight class for both men and Figueroa did not look in shape at all.  The fight started with Figueroa throwing an obscene amount of punches and never taking a step back, like all of his fights seems to go.  While DeMarco was finding success with a counter straight right hand he wasn't as busy as his younger foe.  However, as the fight wore on it was DeMarco who looked fresher and he started to land heavier punches.  The fight didn't let up until the final bell and when the scores were announced Figueroa was given the very close unanimous decision victory.  Also on that card was Chris Arreola who was looking to stay relevant.  Arreola took on Travis Kauffman and despite being dropped in 3rd round he was able to win the fight by the way of split decision.

  • After the big fights on NBC the action continued on NBC Sports with middleweight prospect Terrell Guasha taking on Said El Harrak.  That fight was never in question and when the scores were read Gausha got the unanimous decision win and according to the judges he never even lost a round.  Victor Ortiz also appeared on that card and he took on Gilberto Sanchez Leon.  Ortiz looked good against a limited opponent and dropped him twice early before winning the fight with an 8th round stoppage.

  • Another card appeared on HBO Latino and that card was headlined by Pedro Campa and Aaron Herrera.  Despite a few good exchanges early the fight was never all that close.  Campa controlled the action and was able to secure a wide unanimous decision win which kept his record perfect.  Also on that card was a title eliminator between Sullivan Barrera and Karo Murat.  Barrera was an undefeated prospect who was taking his first real test against Murat and he passed with flying colors, knocking Murat out in the 5th round.

  • The last card of the week took place on the Spanish language channel UniMas.  That card was headlined by the extremely talented prospect Oscar Valdez.  Valdez, who is still only 24-years-old took on Ernie Sanchez and had no problems at all scoring a big 3rd round knockout.  Another undefeated prospect, Jose Benavidez took on Sidney Siqueira in the co-feature of that UniMas card and he too had an easy night.  While Benavidez couldn't stop Siqueira he did beat him convincingly by the way of unanimous decision.
