Weekend Wrap-Up

  • There was a big middleweight title fight last Saturday night on Showtime.  The fight was between Daniel Jacobs and Peter Quillin and most people expected it to be a good scrap that either ended late or went to the scorecards.  Instead Jacobs shocked everyone by stopping Quillin in the opening round.  Jacobs got Quillin in trouble with a punch to the temple that threw off his equilibrium and then followed up with a flurry of punches.  Finally Jacobs caught Quillin with a punch that nearly floored him and when referee Harvey Dock went in to take a close look he waived the fight off.  This was a huge win for Jacobs who entered as a slight underdog and he will now be in line for some very big matches.

  • Also on that card was a title fight between Jesus Cuellar and Jonathan Oquendo.  Both fighters usually put on a good show but their fight on Saturday was anything but.  The fight was easily controlled bu Cuellar and Oquendo just didn't put up much of a fight against the champion.  When the scores were announced it came as no surprise that Cuellar was the unanimous decision winner but he surely would have liked to look better than he did on such a high profile card.

  • Before the title fights on Showtime aired, Showtime Extreme put on a two-fight card headlined by Chris Algieri.  Algieri was in his second fight under new trainer John David Jackson and like his first time with Jackson, he looked good.  Algieri fought Erick Bone and together they fought a fan friendly bout that saw a lot of leather being traded.  In the end Algieri came away with the unanimous decision win, on he really needed.  Also on that card was cruiserweight prospect Marcus Browne who had looked good against faded competition in recent fights.  On Saturday he looked good again, stopping Francisco Sierra in the 4th round of their fight scheduled to go 10.

  • HBO also aired a card on Saturday night on their HBO Latino channel.  That card was headlined former title holder Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. as he took on newcomer Rafael Rivera.  The two pugilists put on an action packed show that could have gone either way.  When the scores were announced it was the younger Rivera who came away with the split decision victory.  Also on that card was a light heavyweight bout between Medzhid Bektemirov and Alexander Brand.  Despite being 10 years older than his opponent Brand was able to score a victory over the previously unbeaten Bektemirov by the way of split decision.

  • The best fight of last week happens to be the one no one is talking about and many people probably didn't even see.  That fight took place on beIN Sports Espanol and featured Francisco Rodriguez taking on Moises Fuentes.  Many people expected to see a hard fought battle and those who watched got exactly that.  Although the fight looked like it was on the verge of being stopped on multiple occasions, both fighters made it to the final bell on their feet.  It was a fight that could have gone either way but two of the three ringside judges saw it for Fuentes, giving him the split decision win.
